Job Description

Position Summary
The Associate Dean (AD) of Operations and Strategy of the School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) provides strategic direction and management of resources and serves as an advisor to the Director and Dean on all matters related to staff hiring finance budget planning and the processing of personnel matters. The Associate Dean will lead the staff and oversee day-to-day operations within the school. The successful candidate will also work with the Dean to carry out advance work leading strategic initiatives and high-profile projects building capacity in the executive leadership team and the office of the Dean staff and representing the interests and priorities of the Dean through effective communication coordination and integration of the Deans initiatives priorities and objectives. Key responsibilities include: Provides leadership and guidance on the preparation of budgets and the allocation and utilization of financial resources. Manage flow of issues projects and problem resolution. Provide independent analysis and judgement in prioritizing situations needing attention and take steps to ensure projects are moved forward and tracked for progress through completion. Proactively identify information that has the potential to be impactful; elevate issues and provide resolution options to the Dean in a timely manner. Ensure that the Dean is well prepared for all individual board and committee meetings. Manage operations of the Office of the Dean including staff supervision establishing workflows policies and standard operating procedures managing assignments overseeing EHRA and SHRA personnel and assuring proper information flow to and from the Dean. Interact regularly and efficiently with the Schools Development team and the University Development Office for corporate foundation and individual giving. Interact regularly and efficiently with the Schools communications team and University communications to ensure open and transparent communications from the Deans office. Assist the Dean in planning and convening regular meetings and retreats for the senior leadership team of the School. Assure that relevant issues receive appropriate action or follow-up on behalf of the Dean. Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the leadership of SCiLL and the leadership of the College of Arts and Sciences Prioritize incoming issues to and from the Dean determine issue priority and identify action steps stakeholders and potential resolutions. Handle special strategic initiatives and projects as determined by the Dean. Scope plan and execute quick-turnaround projects with little outside assistance. Oversee transfer of projects to other stakeholders as appropriate. Produce reports and briefings on assigned subject matter relevant to the Deans office. Assist the Director and Dean in planning for current and future space utilization including strategic space planning for a potential residential college component for SCiLL.

Required Qualifications Competencies And Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in higher education administration is required as is a comprehensive knowledge of the organization and mission of a large complex research university. Core competencies/skills and characteristics: Financial acumen and experience managing operations and resource allocation within an academic unit Trustworthy and highly credible to key constituents Strong verbal and written communication skills Quick study about how to best meet the needs of the dean Strong interpersonal skills and highly collaborative and collegial Flexible but focused and decisive. Able to navigate issues with varying degrees of ambiguity in a fast-paced environment Tactful diplomatic and persistent Political awareness and sensitivity; experience working with political and/or legislative groups is a plus Values differences of opinion and diversity of colleagues Open to feedback and can give feedback in ways that are heard understood and accepted Catalyst for change-e.g. can develop and encourage creative approaches to problem solving versus maintaining the status quo A smart risk-taker Able to multi-task to meet the Director and Deans demanding and varied projects and schedule

Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Prior experience at UNC -Chapel Hill is strongly preferred
