Job Description

The Clinical Veterinarian assists the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and IO in the oversight of the animal care and use program. The Clinical Veterinarian ensures the animals are cared for in compliance with regulations and company policies guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs veterinary rounds as scheduled and provides clinical care and preventive medicine support. Documents rounds on individual animal treatment sheets for consistent case tracking.
  • Provides guidance to ensure dayto-day implementation of the animal care and use program including but not limited to:
  • Partners with the head of Operations to ensure that all animal care related activities are conducted in accordance with company policies guidelines and SOPs and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards and regulations.
    • Ensures that documentation requirements are met.
    • Collaborates with the AV and IO to institute the use of appropriate methods to prevent control diagnose and treat diseases and injuries.
    • Provides expertise and consultation as a partner on matters of animal health and welfare including but not limited to: health status control (vaccination and zoonosis); the use of proper anesthesia and analgesia in laboratory animals; recognition and training for treatment of in the relief of pain and distress. discussion of the possible complications related to procedures used or disease models proposed; development and/or review of the plans for appropriate and timely medical intervention.
    • Ensures daily observation of all animals to assess their health and well-being;
    • Conducts routine Physical Examinations (PE) including the testing of non-human primates for tuberculosis (TB).
    • Assists the AV in oversight of quarantine program which may include participation in vendor management e.g. reviewing vendor health information and other responsibilities as assigned.
    • May serve as the back-up AV for all areas of the animal care and use program.
    • May assist in management of the activities of an assigned program
    • May assist with training including ensuring training activities are properly documented.
  • May perform surgical support and provide anesthesia surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice.
  • May serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) as a member and/or as the back-up Veterinarian Reviewer for IACUC proposals and amendments.
  • Provides emergency coverage and on weekends and holidays as scheduled for the care of animals.
  • May participate in the development and implementation of company policies state and federal regulations and other assignments required to support the animal care program.
  • Remains current on new and revised study protocols animal care treatments etc.
  • Complies with all regulatory guidelines occupation health as well as health and safety programs in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required.

PROBLEM-SOLVING/DECISION-MAKING/PLANNING

  • As an expert in animal care exercises independent judgment to solve immediate emergency problems regarding the animal care program at all levels of complexity.
  • Prescribes medications and establishes treatments for animals beyond SOPs protocols or IACUC related documents for animal welfare

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • May supervise veterinary staff and provide technical supervision of employees involved with animal care.
  • In collaboration with the AV and senior staff supports implementation of the companys veterinary care program to ensure the animals are cared for in compliance with the regulations and company policies.
