A Brief Overview
The Chaplain is responsible for responding to needs of patients family members and staff designated in consultation with the Director Spiritual Care Services and functions as a member of the Spiritual Care Service staff. The Chaplain coordinates all services to a specific in-patient unit(s) or groups; serves as chaplain on assigned patient unit(s); and participates as staff for the Spiritual Care Service in care conferences for such units. Provides spiritual care assessments interventions and support for patients and their families.

What you will do
  • Provides interfaith spiritual assessment and intervention which enables patients family members visitors and staff to draw upon their own religious and spiritual resources.
  • Serves as staff person and coordinates care with multi-disciplinary teams for designated patient units and groups.
  • Provides internal and external teaching and outreach on spiritual care topics.
  • Performs special pastoral/spiritual services (baptisms memorials etc) requested of the Spiritual Care Service and as appropriate to his/her/their professional functioning.
  • Coordinates care with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students and volunteers.
  • Serves as a clinical mentor to CPE students and Spiritual Care volunteers and as time permits medical and genetics counseling students.
  • Participates in research activities undertaken by Spiritual Care Service.
  • Participates as an alternate in the on-call rotation when needed.
  • Serves as a liaison to area congregations as requested.
  • In addition performs specialized duties specific to their particular role such as: serving on specialized committees performing particular religious functions/services. Duties may vary based on the defined specialty of Palliative Care as follows:
  • PALLIATIVE CARE:
  • Serves as member of both the Palliative Medicine team and the Spiritual Care Service team.
  • Assesses and documents individualized plan of care.
  • Documents and communicates expected outcomes to the interdisciplinary treatment team including the palliative care and primary teams.
  • Participates in daily patient care rounds which would include articulating the spiritual/religious/emotional dimensions of the care plan for all palliative care patients.
  • Participates in weekly reflection rounds/bereavement rounds for staff and as appropriate in committees.
  • Addresses issues causing moral or spiritual distress to patients their families staff and others.
  • Serves as an educational resource regarding spiritual care in the medical setting; the role of Chaplain in the interdisciplinary team including and not limited to religious practices ethical issues palliative care advance care planning and recognizing spiritual distress.
  • Fosters conversation and clarification on cultural ethical religious and dynamics that can affect patient care family interactions and staff performance.
  • Serves as a cultural broker by embodying cultural competence cultural humility while assisting in bridging culture gap between patient/family and staff.
  • Participates in and/or facilitates patient care conferences as appropriate to assess patient/family understanding of illness and prognosis goals values and preferences.
  • Assists in officiating interfaith ecumenical or religiously specific rituals / services for patients families and staff. May officiate on-site events such as memorial services weddings baptisms and blessings.

Education Qualifications
  • Masters Degree or graduate certificate in work-related discipline required.
  • Graduation from a seminary or school of theology that approved by a professional chaplain certifying organization.

Experience Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of directly related work experience.
  • Completion of Four (4) Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • Chaplaincy experience with Palliative Care including advanced care planning.

  • Ability and stamina to minister to patients/residents/clients with varying physical and mental dysfunctions.
  • Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver.
  • Ability to energize team members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationships exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills and exercise sound judgment and professionalism in business and personnel matters.
  • Ability to provide leadership and influence others.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
  • These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience education or licensure/certification.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • A Masters Degree in theology divinity or religious studies.
  • Palliative Care and Hospice Advanced Board Certification.
  • Certificate in Palliative Care Chaplaincy and/or equivalent coursework.
  • One (1) year of Hospital Chaplaincy experience in supporting patients and clinical teams with decision-making.
  • One (1) year of experience with crisis intervention and end-of-life hospital spiritual care/chaplaincy.
  • Ordination or commissioning by ones faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) preferred .
  • National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) preferred .
  • Neshama: The Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) preferred .
  • Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) preferred .
  • National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC) preferred .

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $36.71 - $47.71 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity experience education specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
