Job Description

Working/Functional Title

Veterinary Nurse I - Internal Medicine

Position Summary

Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the VeterinaryMedical Center; this position will primarily be working in the Internal Medicine service; receives patients; communicates with clients; instructsand demonstrates techniques to students; assists students technicians and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies equipmentand cleanliness of hospital areas.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience; experience in extensive patient care surgery anesthesia drug- dosing and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. Become licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting.

Lifting of animal patients onto cages and medical equipment; carrying animals between cages and exam tables and gurneys; pushingcarts containing animals and equipment to other units; climbing stairs carrying lab samples; restraining animals; preparing for medicalprocedures and treatments. Lift animals up to 50lbs individually and up to 150lbs as ateam.

Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium Work with animals or unfixed tissue Wear a respirator (does not includepaper dust mask worn for comfort)
