The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) has a staffing need for an experienced and technically proficient Wastewater Process Engineer III within the East Process Control Unit.
About the Role:The Wastewater Process Engineer III will play a key role on the WTD Process team and perform advanced engineering duties. The successful candidate will develop plan and direct process feasibility studies to improve treatment process performance and research and recommend new equipment and chemicals. You will support capital project reviews/implementation energy and chemical conservation initiatives and complete regulatory tasks and reports. You will become an expert on our treatment plant permits (e.g. Municipal Wastewater Puget Sound Nutrient Industrial Stormwater Reclaimed Water and air permits) and help convey requirements to our Operations and Maintenance Section leadership and the treatment operators and maintenance workers.

The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) protects public health and the environment of the central Puget Sound region by collecting and treating wastewater while recovering valuable resources that would otherwise be lost. We manage a vital infrastructure that contributes to the regions economic development and provide services to 18 cities 15 local sewer districts the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and nearly two million residents across a 424-square-mile area in King Snohomish and Pierce counties. We enforce regulations to reduce harmful waste discharge and actively educate the public and businesses on water quality protection. What You Will Be Doing:
- Act as the technical engineering expert in process equipment systems and processes.
- Review and provide feedback on project scopes engineering plans and specifications to ensure compatibility with existing facilities.
- Review and evaluate start-up and commissioning procedures for new equipment.
- Research projects to optimize existing plant processes to ensure maximum performance and cost-effective operation.
- Serve as client representative for capital projects and perform start-up work associated with these projects. Prepare progress reports project proposals and technical reports.
- Monitor process and equipment health and partner with other work groups during process upset.
- Backfill for the Process Control Supervisor.
Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills
Qualifications You Bring:
- Bachelors degree or higher in an engineering field or equivalent combination of education and experience in a physical science engineering field and/or wastewater ranging from certificate programs through doctorate degrees and post graduate work.
- Skill in oral and written communication techniques and principles to be measured through a detailed review of submitted materials (e.g. cover letter resume and answer to supplemental questions).
- Computer proficiency as measured through familiarity with and use of general software (Microsoft suite applications such as Teams Outlook and Excel) and/or through familiarity with and use of industry specific software (e.g. Lab Information Management Systems Distributed Control Systems Water Information Systems and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).
- 8 years of professional wastewater working experience at municipal treatment plants wastewater consulting firms education/research institutions and/or industrial manufacturers with on-site treatment plants.

Required Licenses or Certification:- Professional Engineer license (PE) - any state with ability to get a Washington PE within one year and/or a Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Group IV certificate (or ability to obtain in 12 months).

Working Conditions:
- Onsite and Remote Work Details:Employees in this role work primarily onsite with the potential to work from home 1 day out of the week or as needed. Onsite reporting location is at South Plant 1200 Monster Rd SW Renton WA 98057. This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the departments vision.
- Work Schedule:This full-time position works a 40-hour work week with flexible schedules. This position is not covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by S.E.I.U L925.
