Job Description

  • 70% Assist Media Production Staff Transcribe edit and caption multimedia content for online course delivery.
  • 20% Assist Instructional Design Staff Format accessible course materials across various digital platforms.
  • 10% Assist Exam Coordinator Proctor midterm and final exams. Occasional evening hours are required during Finals Week.

Work Schedule
1520 hours per week. Normal business hours are Monday Friday from 8 A.M. 5 P.M. This position requires occasional evening work hours during finals week.

Position Overview
The KU Center for Online and Distance Learning serves faculty and staff who develop and deliver online and hybrid courses. Our focus is to facilitate KUs strategic goals for expanding online learning by providing pedagogy and technology expertise in support of teaching and learning.

The Student Assistant plays a key role in supporting the delivery of accessible online learning experiences. This position is primarily responsible for transcribing editing and captioning audio and video content for online courses. Additional responsibilities include proctoring midterm and final exams and creating accessible digital documents such as PDFs Word files and PowerPoint presentations to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be preenrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/nonexempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/nonexempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
