Summary:
Under general supervision the Medical Laboratory Technician performs phlebotomy and a variety of difficult venipuncture procedures difficult technical procedures and other associated responsibilities in the clinical laboratory while maintaining laboratory area and equipment.
Duties to include:
- Perform phlebotomy.
- Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis for all levels of testing complexity on laboratory clinical specimens such as blood tissue and body fluids.
- Provide information to health care provider regarding test methodology and interpretation.
- Evaluate test results and provide support to Laboratory staff.
- Investigate quality assurance issues involving patient samples.
- Recommend corrective action for quality assurance.
- Calibrate conduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation.
- Seek technical direction from technical consultant with specific instrumentation problems.
- Assist in reagent comparisons evaluate results and recommend changes to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
- Participate in evaluation of equipment and recommend products for acquisition.
- Maintain inventory and orders supplies as needed.
- Comply with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Perform record and review daily quality control associated with assigned testing.
- Assist and coordinate proficiency testing for moderate complexity instruments.
- Document and report variances.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance program within UI Community Clinics.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and make recommendations for resolution of identified problems/errors within the safety incident reporting system.
- May assist with writing and revising laboratory procedures according to NCCLS guidelines.
- Assist in a positive and professional manner with training staff across UI Community Clinics.
- Performs daily lab functions as required including the collection processing and accessioning of clinical biological specimens such as blood and body fluids.
- Maintain effective working relationships with faculty staff students and the public.

Schedule: Variable hours completed MondayFriday between 7:00 AM 9:30 PM; 8hour shifts no weekends no holidays no oncall time

Salary: $44972 $82716(based on years of experience)
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- A Bachelors degree in a chemical biological clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited institution OR
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) OR
- Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Special Qualifications
- Drivers License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards
- Availability to provide support to other clinical locations based on clinical need/hours
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Strong phlebotomy skills.
- Previous experience with lab audits.
- Previous experience performing EKGs.
- Previous experience handling and processing lab specimens
- Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in performing routine laboratory testing (urinalysis blood tests etc.) on clinical biological specimens such as blood and body fluids which may include but not limited to: Piccolo CMPs CBSs etc.
- Performs routine moderate complexity testing including but not limited to urinalyses rapid antigen kit tests and various point of care tests. Uses the Laboratory Information System to accession specimens. Performs or may direct performance of data entry labeling and processing of laboratory specimens.
- Assist and coordinate proficiency testing for moderate complexity instruments.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience with EPIC and Beaker.
- Previous walkin clinic experience.
