Title: NHSS Graduate ResearchAssistant

Hiring Unit:Native Hawaiian Student Services

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) team:

  1. Leads the digitization and animation conversion efforts to put Hawaiian archival research photos maps and newspaper visuals into an animated format for use in digital storytelling formats for NHSS Hawaiian student publication project.
  2. Student Publication project including working with student authors and leading art layout and design efforts for getting projects printready.
  3. Assists with compiling archival research materials that support the NHSS Hawaiian student publication project and produce visual and artistic renderings to support and supplement the archival research gathering with the student authors.
  4. Assists with the daytoday management of the NHSS Student Scholar Centers to include assisting students staff and/or community members who require support and information regarding the NHSS Student Scholar Centers and affiliated programs;
  5. Assists the faculty and staff team with the development and implementation of various cocurricular programming including workshops annual student research conference summer institute program webinars and forums for undergraduate and graduate students;
  6. Supports NHSS program students including counseling and peer mentorship support;
  7. Conducts classroom school visits and other tabling and outreach events to inform prospective students of NHSS programming and services to recruit students into program and services;
  8. Assists with the collection of grant data such as maintaining sign ins and program data;
  9. Assists with liaison functions between NHSS and various NHSS partners providing meeting coordination and recordkeeping support workshop design and materials and program coordination;
  10. Support Native Hawaiian Student Services events and assist with general administrative tasks;
  11. Designs and implements student workshops trainings presentations and other events;
  12. Assists with administrative functions such as processing purchase orders and payments to vendors tracking program participants and communicating with partners.
  13. The GRA will also work collaboratively with Native Hawaiian Student Services and will perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Applicants must have earned a BA in Hawaiian Language Hawaiian Studies Ethnic Studies Art or any related discipline.
  2. Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) program at the time of hire and throughout the appointment period and be in good academic standing and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  3. Strong organizational writing and communication skills.
  4. demonstrated experience with art and publication projects.
  5. demonstrated experience with Hawaiian programs organizations and/or education.
  6. demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty staff and students.
  7. knowledge of Hawaiian language and culture.
  8. Applicant needs to be able to work independently and reliably within a team.
  9. Must be available summer evenings and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. BA or MA in Hawaiian Language Hawaiian Studies or related discipline with substantial background in Hawaiian studies and language;
  2. demonstrated experience with art and publication projects related to Hawaiian language and Hawaiian archival research;
  3. demonstrated experience working with Hawaiian culturalbased learning and Hawaiian students in higher education;
  4. demonstrated university teaching experience; demonstrated experience in organizing and implementing service learning and civic engagement programs in Native Hawaiian communities; p campus; experience with student academic and/or career counseling;
  5. demonstrated experience with Word Excel PowerPoint Pages iMovie and Photoshop software; familiarity with Native Hawaiian Student Services initiatives;
  6. knowledge of University of Hawaii System including its academic policies; and knowledge of the educational needs of Native Hawaiian students.
