The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building maintaining and operating the states roads bridges tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board it also provides funding for airports rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest statemaintained highway system in the country covering 58321 miles of interstate primary secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.

The Salem District maintains more than 9200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of:

Bedford Botetourt Carroll Craig Floyd Franklin Giles Henry Montgomery Patrick Pulaski and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.


The Salem District Shop is looking for an Equipment Repair Technician to join our team. The qualified candidate will diagnose repair inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction highway maintenance grounds and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations.

Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Performing Virginia State Inspections

Diagnosis and Repair by using electronic testing equipment service and equipment repair manuals and online resources

Information Processing and Paperwork by preparing processing and maintaining required maintenance and repair documentation.

Performing preventative maintenance on vehicles equipment or assets and make repairs as needed

Designing fabricating modifying and welding components to make necessary repairs

Prepare equipment for emergency operations and make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations.

Performing repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles equipment and tools including engines transmissions electrical and computer systems etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Ability to operate various types of light medium heavyduty trucks equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Knowledge of cutting welding and fabrication operations.
Ability to read comprehend service and equipment repair manuals gauges and testing devices.
Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
Safety shoes required.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Skill in the use of computers hand and power tools and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of the diagnosis repair maintenance of automotive construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

Additional Considerations

A combination of training experience or education in Automative Repair Maintenance or related field desired.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
Virginia State Inspection License Class A
Experience repairing and maintaining a variety of automotive and construction equipment.

Additionally required for CDL holders:
Full Query drug and alcohol history in FMCSA Clearinghouse Register at: FMCSA Clearinghouse.
Preemployment drug and alcohol screening
Federal DOT preemployment physical

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

This position is designated as essential and as such all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
