Substation Structural Engineer
Position Overview: The Substation Structural Engineer is responsible for the structural design analysis and detailing of substations ranging from 380kV 115kV to 33kV . The role involves designing both precast and castinsitu structures underground Utilities and foundations for outdoor equipment while adhering to applicable standards safety regulations and project requirements. The engineer will also coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient safe and Optimized structural solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Structural Design and Analysis
- Design and analyze structural systems for substation buildings (380kV 115kV 33kV) including precast and castinsitu components.
- Perform structural analysis and design of cable tunnels cable trenches duct banks manholes hand holes septic tanks soak pits and underground water tanks.
- Design outdoor equipment foundations such as:
- Surge arresters
- Power transformers & firewalls
- Static VAR Generator (SVG) foundation structures.
- Gantry tower foundations
- PACU pads etc
- Ensure designs comply with structural codes load requirements seismic considerations and sitespecific conditions.
- Architectural and Civil Coordination
- Interpret and integrate substation architectural plans elevation drawings and section layouts.
- Develop site grading plans including topography analysis levelling and contour adjustments to optimize foundation levels and drainage solutions.
- Design internal and access roads within substations ensuring alignment with site topography and grading requirements.
- Software Proficiency
- Utilize STAAD Pro and ETABS for structural modelling analysis and design of complex substation structures.
- Draft and detail structural layouts plans and sections using AutoCAD and Micro Station.
- Perform site grading earthworks modelling and topographical layout designs using Civil 3D.
- Develop design documentation load calculations and reports using Microsoft Excel and other calculation tools.
- Quality and Compliance
- Ensure structural designs comply with international design codes (e.g. ACI SBC AISC IBC or regional standards).
- Coordinate with other Disciplines (Mechanical Electrical teams & EPC Contractor) to align designs with project requirements.
- Conduct design reviews peer checks and ensure accuracy efficiency and constructability of designs.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Civil/Structural Engineering; Masters degree is an advantage.
- Minimum 510 years of experience in the structural design of highvoltage substations or similar infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Structural analysis and design software: STAAD Pro ETABS
- Drafting tools: AutoCAD Micro Station
- Site grading and topographical design tools: Civil 3D
- Documentation tools: Microsoft Excel for calculations and reporting
- Familiarity with international structural design codes (e.g. SBCACI AISC IBC).
- Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
