Job Description

Organizational Responsibilities:
The Director of SMC Experience Data & Communications reports to the Vice President for Student Development.
Job Summary:
The Director of SMC Experience (SMCX) Data & Communications is a strategic leader focused on driving student engagement retention and success. This role integrates data analysis with dynamic communications to enhance the student experience across the SMCX division. The Director oversees the use of the divisions CRM (Slate) manages digital communications and implements innovative strategies to promote campus resources and events. This position serves as a key connector between departments leading digital process improvements and communication efforts that build a vibrant and informed student community.
Areas of Responsibility:
CRM Data Management & Reporting
  • Serve as the division lead for Slate CRM: manage student data ensure data integrity and implement tracking and reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology & Analytics to optimize CRM functionality.
  • Create dashboards and generate actionable insights that inform retention and engagement strategies.
  • Lead digital process improvement initiatives across SMCX using Slate or related platforms.
  • Monitor and analyze student engagement metrics to identify trends and recommend improvements.
Communications & Content Strategy
  • Develop and execute an annual student communications plan aligned with key academic and cocurricular milestones.
  • Support SMCX departments in communication strategy development creative content ideas and ensuring they are being equitably featured on communication channels.
  • Write and manage studentfacing messages across email SMS and event announcements.
  • Lead content development for social media digital signage and select web pages to drive student awareness and participation.
  • Support graphic design and photography needs for events and promotions.
  • Grow and engage student audiences through creative digital campaigns and social media initiatives.
  • Oversee XHype the SMCX student brand ambassador program developing student leaders and ensuring peerdriven content is relevant and impactful.
  • Other general duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Development
Collaboration & Leadership
  • Lead SMCs fall and spring checkin process including scheduling student checkin times portal updates and communication plans.
  • Act as primary liaison to the SMC Marketing and IT/Analytics teams for studentrelated projects.
  • Provide training and support for staff using Slate for communications and retention initiatives.
  • Support major college events including Orientation Open House MoveIn Enrollment Days and Commencement.
  • Serve on key division committees such as SMCX Leadership Involvement and FirstYear Experience.
  • Stay current on trends in student engagement digital communications and CRM technology.
Skills Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Customerservice orientation and a collaborative teamminded approach.
  • Basic graphic design and photography skills; proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
  • Selfmotivated creative and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Comfort working with both quantitative and qualitative data.
Working Conditions:
This is a fulltime oncampus position. This role requires inperson collaboration with students faculty and staff. Occasional evening and weekend hours are expected for campus events and special projects.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to move around the campusand frequently climb a flight of stairs in the residence halls.
  • Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity are needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer monitor in handwritten form and printed on paper.
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree required.
  • 25 years of experience in communications CRM management or data reporting (Slate experience preferred).
  • Proven ability to manage multiplatform communication strategies.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Excel Tableau Power BI) and website content management systems.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor messages to diverse student audiences.
