The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building maintaining and operating the states roads bridges tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board it also provides funding for airports rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest statemaintained highway system in the country covering 58321 miles of interstate primary secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.
The Salem District maintains more than 9200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of: Bedford Botetourt Carroll Craig Floyd Franklin Giles Henry Montgomery Patrick Pulaski and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.
Salem Residency is seeking a motivatedMaintenance Crew Leader to work closely with area supervisors to execute varied complex work assignments. The Crew Leader ensures proper work site protection is maintained; Trains and leads crew members in performing manual labor equipment operation and following environmental requirements in roadway and roadside maintenance activities; Monitors crew performance onsite and ensures work meets agency standards; maintains manual and electronic records of work performed; and serves as a backup supervisor as needed.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather flooding and/or traffic incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of roadway and roadside maintenance and construction materials practices and procedures.
Experience operating light medium and heavyduty equipment
Basic manual and electronic record keeping skills.
Ability to oversee and troubleshoot complex work assignments.
Ability to perform manual labor including frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and to use hand and power tools.
Ability to read interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manual guidelines.
Valid Drivers License and ability to travel independently to assigned work locations.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather such as rain wind dust humidity and in summer heat and winter cold environs during and after normal work hours which can include nights weekends and holidays.
Additional Considerations
Recent experience performing heavy manual labor and operating diverse equipment
Experience training/leading a crew performing diverse skilled maintenance activities
Experience leading emergency response operations
Experience preparing reports and keeping manual and electronic records
Experience with VDOT maintenance purchasing and inventory management protocols
Possesses CDL

This position is designated as essential and as such all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
