Orchard Street Academy (OSA) is Assabet Valley Collaboratives therapeutic middle and high school for students with a range of socialemotional and learning needs.
Assabet Valley Collaborative (AVC) is an educational service agency in Metrowest/Central Massachusetts. Our services include school programs wraparound services transportation services professional development cooperative purchasing and consulting. Transition Specialist Overview:
We are looking for a transition specialist who serves as a leader and as a learner; a team member who is flexible resourceful and thrives in a fastpaced nontraditional collaborative environment. We seek team members who demonstrate a learning mindset and ability to receive feedback selfreflect and adapt. We seek a transition specialist who effectively facilitates the learning of others by pushing their thinking building their skills and sparking their selfreflection and curiosity.
The Transition Specialist promotes students readiness to enter and succeed in career pathways and/or secondary education through partnership with caregivers students and identified stakeholders. The Transition Specialist is studentcentered and collaborates with other team members and students to develop the Portrait of a Graduate. The Transition Specialist position includes direct instruction writing and reporting on IEP transition goals and setting up work study assignments.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify community resources and establish linkages to assist students with development of selfdetermination and independent living skills
- Collaborates to create and adjust student schedules which includes placement of students in appropriate classes to ensure college and career readiness; ability to analyze transcripts to allow access and opportunity to every student.
- Collaborate with district guidance and special education departments to plan for and maintain transcripts and credits towards graduation
- Collaborates and partners with district members to support students transition goals
- Provide direct teaching of college and career readiness skill both through weekly group classes and individual sessions
- Conduct transition and/or vocational assessments as needed
- Participate as a member of the IEP team and conduct all related tasks including but not limited to: assessment for IEP development of IEP transition planning writing transition goals implementation of IEP data collection and progress reporting on transition goals.
- Collaborates on job development and community outreach as part of transition planning
- Demonstrates knowledge and use of pertinent technologies related to transition exploration and development
- Work closely with students families and IEP teams to develop individualized transition plans that address the students unique needs and goals
- Responsible to network make referrals and maintain relationships with community organizations employers adult service providers and colleges/post secondary institutions
- Works in partnership with the OSA Job Coach
- Advocate for students rights and needs
- Facilitate PD on topics of transition to include family sessions
- Development of systems to support transition process e.g. data collection tools curriculum development assessment processes
- Implementation of processes to support staff development e.g. job coach training curriculum design connecting IEP development to student vision
- Maintain expertise in transition domains e.g. law best practice policy changes
- Partners with others to advocate for transition systems changes at OSA to better serve students
Professional Growth and Ethics:
- Adheres to established federal state and local laws and regulations
- Refines and develops professional skills through training professional reading and continuing education
- Maintains confidentiality of student information according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Perform other duties as assigned
EVALUATION: Evaluation to be performed annually in accordance with Assabet Valley Collaboratives personnel handbook and pertinent regulations and statutes.
The ideal candidate will possess or demonstrate the following:
- Belief in the inherent brilliance of our students and their families
- Strong instructional technology skills
- Ability to thrive within a team while also being able to work independently.
- Strong foundation in socialemotional learning traumainformed healingcentered restorative practice and/or cultural responsiveness
- Ability to engage with conflict or discomfort as opportunities for learning
- Experience teaching neurodiverse adolescents in a variety of formats
- Expertise/experience in special education
- Bilingual or multilingual is a plus
Qualification Required:
Masters Degree required. Completion of an approved professional program leading to a professional license in one or more of the following areas: Special Education Teacher Guidance Counselor or Social Worker/Mental Health Counselor. DESE Endorsement as a Transition Specialist or Certified Rehabilitation Counselor is highly desired. Valid drivers license safe driving record ability/willingness for transporting students in Massachusetts.
Schedule:
185 day schedule. Reporting hours: 8:00am3:00pm. Summer hours are also available but not required.
Physical Demands:
This is an active position that requires frequent physical movement to meet the needs of our students. Staff will receive training to physically intervene as needed per AVC Physical Restraint protocol policy and applicable regulations.
