Job Description

JOB TITLE: Dispatcher

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

FUNDING SOURCE: Local

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director

PAY GRADE: Trans 03

DUTY DAYS: 230

DEPARTMENT: Transportation Department

DATE REVISED: October 2021

This position is eligible for a Letter of Assurance

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assists in coordinating the daily operations of all route buses extracurricular trips special education equipment and personnel involved in transporting students and staff of Irving ISD. Responsible for monitoring and answering radio calls dispatching buses answering phones conveying needed information to drivers and monitoring traffic using GPS or any other acquired system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification preferred
  • Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements preferred
  • Ability to pass annual DOT physical examination and random drug testing
  • Train the Trainer Certification preferred
  • One year flex driver preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of acceptable school transportation standards and operations
  • Knowledge of bus scheduling principles and practices
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with all customers and stakeholders
  • Computer Skills Internet Microsoft Word Excel Outlook GPS Software Etc.
  • Practical organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong work ethic and excellent attendance record
  • Familiar with Irving and the locations of the schools preferred
  • Ability to read and provide directions from a map
  • Ability to effectively respond to emergencies
  • Ability to work well under stress
  • Must be reliable

Minimum Experience:

Three 3 years of experience in transportation operations public school district experience preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:

  1. Works with the Routing Specialist to assign drivers/attendants including daily routes substitute drivers middays and field trips.
  2. Works the afternoon shift; 9:00 AM6:00 PM
  3. Works with the Field Trip Clerk concerning transportation assignments for all students and staff for Field Trips.
  4. Assist the Field Trip Clerk with the assignments of buses and other Irving ISD Districtowned vehicles for routes and field trips.
  5. Assist Routing Specialist in establishing pickup/dropoff locations for students.
  6. Assist Route Specialist in working with drivers to determine the best travel route during their daily assignments and for field trips.
  7. Maintain professional communication with customers and other stakeholders responding to all phone calls/concerns/emails from customers and stakeholders.
  8. Verify student eligibility for requested services.
  9. Monitor all routes to ensure that bus stops are efficient and safely located.
  10. Assist with summer school bus routes and employee assignments/absenteeism.
  11. Support the educational goals of the district.
  12. Contribute to the recommendation implementation or improvement of operations and policies within the bus route/student travel division of the Transportation Department.
  13. Follow all safety rules and safety procedures.
  14. Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  15. Attend required staff development as assigned by the Administration and Director.
  16. Follow all rules regulations and policies of the Irving Independent School District.
  17. Organizes assigns cleans and trains on all types of special needs equipment. Maintains organizing in the sped equipment room. Inventory all sped equipment assigned to buses.
  18. Perform other functions assigned by the Director of Transportation or Assistant Director of Transportation.
  19. Other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decisionmaking; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Tools/Equipment Used: Computer scanner/printer/copier calculator twoway radio telephone school bus and safety equipment.

Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Physical Demands/Environment: Frequent travel of school district bus routes; Occasional prolonged and irregular hours; Prolonged use of computer; Prolonged walking bending stooping ascending and descending bus steps; Exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures

Mental Demands: Effective communication skills (verbal and written); Accurate interpretation of policy and procedures; Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; Responds appropriately in emergencies

Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training wearing personal protective equipment as required reporting injuries and incidents immediately to the supervisor and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
