The patient care assistant/mental health aide performs a variety of patient care activities and related nonprofessional services necessary in caring for the personal and emotional needs of adolescent (15 years Medical Surgical units only) adult and/or geriatric patients while under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

PURPOSE & PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse this position performs a variety of patient care activities to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients. Responsible to the Nurse Director and/or designee of the patient care unit to which he/she is assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure/Certification/ Registration:

Current Basic Life Support Certification can be completed during the first 30 days of employment.
Suicide Prevention and Deescalation learning modules as well as Constant Observer Training must be completed if a PCA I will be working as a Patient Observer in the Medical/Surgical area for Suicide Risk patient. Must be completed during the first 90 days of employment.
Successful completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Education:
High School Diploma/GED

Other Qualifications:
Recent subacute or acute care patient care assistant experience preferred.
Must possess the following skills: reading writing and simple mathematical calculations. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups. Integrity and flexibility. Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Manual dexterity required to perform tests and to complete treatments. Ability to understand and follow through on instructions.

Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member.
Demonstrated organization skills and attention to detail
