School Nurse at Swanson Road Intermediate School Reports to: Principal with Districtlevel coordination through the Director of Pupil Services Responsibilities: Manages the school health services program under the direction of the Principal and Superintendent and in compliance with school district health policies procedures and protocols. Strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students. The focus of nursing services is the prevention of illnesses early detection and intervention of health problems and referral procedures. Essential Functions: assesses and manages illness and injury for students and staff in the building administers routine and PRN medications in accordance with MA Nurse Practice Act and District policy participates as the health specialist in Section 504 IEP and Pupil Personnel meetings for students with medical issues impacting their education as needed maintains comprehensive computerized student health records collaborates with school administrators and personnel in improving the social emotional and educational climate of the school environment identifies students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems and establishes appropriate referrals assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional growth including EPI Pen training and the like communicates with parents/guardians on the health needs/concerns of children and participates in home visits as needed to assess the familys needs as related to the childs health oversees the mandated screening programs consistent with Massachusetts General Law and provides followup services when indicated provides preventive health services to students including health education consultation and referrals provides nursing assessments and develops plans of care for students needing health and nursing interventions initiates referrals to parents school personnel and community health resources for intervention and followup services as needed collaborates with the Massachusetts Immunization and Epidemiology Programs to ensure infection control in the schools and promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunization compliance early detection surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases provides ongoing assistance in policy development and establishes standards and reports for school health service programs in collaboration with the MDPH the MDOE and other state agencies functions in accordance with the Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice the Nurse Practice Act and federal and state statutes that impact school nursing communicates key medical information to staff members including substitutes on a needtoknow basis participates as a resource person in the development of procedures for disaster preparedness planning and crisis management intervention coordinates school health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home school and community prepares budgetary requests and needs sharing the same with the Nurse Leader who compiles all data for school health supplies provides consultation on school health issues to school and community members committed to the wellbeing of our students engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices performs other duties as assigned Ability to: develop and maintain accurate student health records utilizing districtselected computer software/proposals identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease coordinate and facilitate services between the school local health agency and other community resources maintain positive and open lines of communication with all staff students and their families manage multiple tasks maintain confidentiality of student records Knowledge of: medical disorders and treatment child growth and development public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies universal precautions federal state and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services district policies procedures rules and regulations FERPA and HIPPA regulations Qualifications: evidence of ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
