Job Description

The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denvers physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning Facilities Management Parking & Mobility Services Auxiliaries & Real Estate and Business & Operations.

Position Summary

The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for developing implementing and managing the universitys Radiation Safety Program to ensure compliance with all applicable federal state and local regulations. This role supports academic research and medical use of radioactive materials and radiationproducing equipment promoting a culture of safety across campus.

This is a temporary nonbenefited position not to exceed 1000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (e.g. NRC CDPHE) and maintain required licenses and registrations.
  • Oversee radiation safety training for faculty staff and students involved in the use of radioactive materials or radiationproducing equipment.
  • Develop and enforce radiation safety policies procedures and protocols in compliance with applicable laws and university standards.
  • Conduct routine inspections of laboratories and facilities to assess compliance with radiation safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records related to radioactive material inventory personnel dosimetry waste disposal and radiation exposure monitoring.
  • Investigate incidents involving radioactive material or radiation exposure and recommend corrective actions.
  • Chair or support the universitys Radiation Safety Committee including preparing meeting agendas reports and maintaining meeting records.
  • Assist with licensing and authorization processes for research protocols involving radiation use.
  • Coordinate radioactive waste management and disposal in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Advise Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on safe use of ionizing and nonionizing radiation.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and incident mitigation related to radiological hazards.
  • Stay current with changes in regulations technologies and best practices in radiation safety.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of NRC and state radiation protection regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in maintaining detailed records and documentation.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in health physics radiological sciences nuclear engineering environmental health or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 35 years of experience in radiation safety or health physics preferably in a university healthcare or research setting.
  • Experience working with radioactive materials and/or radiationproducing equipment.
  • Prior experience in a regulatory compliance role is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a related field
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience lab packing laboratory chemical waste

Work Schedule

The duration of this temporary position is 9 standard schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however actual hours will vary based on needs. This role is anticipated to require approximately 45 hours per month depending on workload and availability.

Hourly Range

The hourly range for the position is $150.00

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
