We are seeking a dedicated entry level Mechanic I to join our dynamic team in a new state of the art facility. In this position you will not only be responsible for diagnosing and repairing vehicles but you will also have the opportunity to collaborate and gain knowledge from team members. Buncombe County invests in a diverse fleet inventory which offers the opportunity to service a wide range of vehicles that include ambulances pursuit vehicles services trucks and sedans electric hybrid as well as traditional gas and diesel vehicles. Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for performing mechanical work to repair maintain and rebuild gasoline and dieselpowered automobile and truck equipment.

Minimum Education Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel automobiles trucks and heavy equipment; must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire.

Additional Training and Experience: Completion of routine safety training post hire.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of North Carolina valid drivers license; North Carolina Inspection License; May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technicians as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.

Essential Functions of the position:

  • Maintain county vehicles in good working order including automobiles trucks ambulances and other vehicles; ensures vehicles are safe and are in good working condition.
  • Perform triage on vehicles bought in for services; perform general and deferred maintenance on assigned vehicles as per scheduler.
  • Perform vehicle inspections as needed by North Carolina state licensing.
  • Applies knowledge of safety procedures when operating tools and working with machinery and moving mechanical parts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the standard practices tools materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and dieselpowered vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of the standard mechanical components of automotive construction and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the heating welding and cutting procedures used in rough repairs of vehicles machines and equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools equipment and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive construction and related equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose common defects in automotive construction and related equipment and to repair such defects with reasonable proficiency.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor associated with mechanical repair work.
