Job Description

Job Title: Peer Support Specialist
Reports to: Peer Support Coordinator
FLSA Code: Full time Exempt with benefits
Hours: 40hour workweek; flexible schedule that includes night and weekend work
Program Area: Behavioral Health; Adult Service Network (ASN)

POSITION SUMMARY
In alignment with the mission and vision of Breakthrough Urban Ministries the Peer Support Specialist provides intentional peer support to 20 individuals across the city as referred through the database.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS
  • Provide intentional peer support to 20 individuals across the city as referred through the database.
  • Attend housing events as identified by All Chicago
  • Conduct assessments and engage individuals in wellness planning.
  • Facilitate referrals to wellness and harm reduction supports.
  • Provide transportation to appointments when funding is available.
  • Offer information on community resources to enhance knowledge of available supports and reduce social isolation.
  • Promote tenancy skills through education and practical support.
  • Assist individuals in applying for benefits.
  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of peer support services and requirements in Illinois.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of services in HMIS the company database and tracking spreadsheets.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) credential required with lived experience in mental health and/or substance use recovery preferred.
  • Experience providing intentional peer support within a community setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of recoveryoriented systems of care from a healingcentered perspective.
  • Must have a valid drivers license

Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of genderresponsive and traumabased services and treatment.
  • Understanding of substance use disorders and effective approaches to care.
  • Understanding of client confidentiality and adherence to the professional code of ethics for CRSSs.
  • Ability to engage individuals at all stages of change
  • Ability to demonstrate punctuality strong interpersonal skills professionalism and problemsolving skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and follow through and be comfortable working in a changing environment.
  • Maintain a high degree of sensitivity tact and diplomacy during stressful situations.
  • Project a professional image to all internal and external customers ensuring correct grooming
  • Ability to use initiative discretion and independent judgment in making decisions
  • Promotes customer care through all actions and behaviors
  • Must possess an accurate and informed understanding of cultural and urban realities especially as related to youth families poverty and community development
  • Demonstrates willingness to consistently improve work performance through their relationship and guidance

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.

SUPERVISION
  • May support supervision of Peer Support Interns
  • Direction received from the Peer Support Coordinator

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job the employee will work in a multipurpose facility and/or outdoors and thus will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be high depending on the activities in the facility.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk and/or sit; use hands and fingers to feel objects tools or controls reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; regularly talk or hear. The employee must be able to bend stoop pull lift as well as have overhead extension of arms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; be able to lift carry or move at least 50 pounds. Must adhere to proper handling and lifting techniques. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used
The employee will generally use general office equipment including but not limited to telephone computer calculator copier overhead projector paper shredder paper cutter and filing systems.

Safety Requirements
Prior to the first day of work must complete a criminal background and sex offender clearance

  • Vacation Days Fulltime employees in this position are eligible to accrue vacation days at a rate of 6.67 13.33 days per month based on tenure with the organization.
  • Personal Days Fulltime employees in this position are eligible for up to 3 personal days annually prorated in year one.
  • Sick Days Fulltime employees in this position are eligible for up to 10 sick days annually prorated in year one.
