Job Description

Salary/Position Classification

  • $15.00 hourly NonExempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 20 hours per week
  • 100% Remote Work Availability: No
  • Hybrid Work Availability (requires some time on campus): No

Purpose of Position

This position observes and assists as appropriate pathologists and pathology assistants in the performance of autopsies and investigations. They are responsible for helping with technical aspects of the autopsy weighing lifting and moving the body cleaning body and assisting with photography and radiology studies as directed by the pathologist. This position involves general autopsy room cleaning and maintenance updating and proper disposal of tissues stocking of supplies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assistance of Autopsy
  • General laboratory cleanup and maintenance
  • Checking stock replacing items preparation of human tissues for cremation preparation of materials for biohazard
  • Direct handling cleaning photography and cutting of human remains including those with extensive trauma burns and/or decomposition changes
  • Exposure to biohazards
  • Mandatory Hepatitis B vaccine prior to work; TB testing available
  • Mandatory use of PPE while performing autopsy or clean up or other time where exposure to human biohazards is possible

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people and maintain respect for various cultural and religious practices beliefs and rituals even if not congruent with your own
  • Commitment to equality equity of all humans and acceptance/respect for human choices and situations
  • Must have physical strength to handle human remains hearing and understanding of basic English for commands and requests sight and pattern recognition. Must physically and mentally be able to deal with and handle deceased human remains including remains with extensive trauma
  • Must physically and mentally deal with deaths of infants and children
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality concerning decedents investigations and results from autopsy and any testing or discussion of potential events regarding cases
  • Must be professional and respectful in dealing with families police and outside agencies regarding cases
  • Must be tolerant and maintain a calm demeanor to a variety of grief reactions that may involve yelling insults foul language denial and other strong reactions to the death of a loved one
  • Must be dedicated to fundamental respect for all human beings in death or in life and committed to objective and unbiased death investigations
  • Must be proactive in selfcare and care of coworkers recognition of stress and seeking and giving peerrelief / stress recognition and professional counseling as appropriate

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completed undergraduate courses in biology chemistry
  • Experience shadowing physicians; knowledge of HIPAA
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed additional undergraduate science courses e.g. organic chemistry psychology
  • Documented experience communicating with individuals in a professional setting
