Under the supervision of the Planning Director the Senior Planner is responsible for advancing the development and implementation of the Citys Municipal Development Plan (planBTV) and other comprehensive/longrange planning studies; conducting research and analysis related to amendments to land use regulations; coordinating and facilitating public outreach and engagement activities necessary for successful planning efforts on behalf of the Planning Department; and working with the Principal Planner in duties related to the Planning Commission. The Senior Planner is also responsible for the management collection use analysis and sharing of spatial data as it relates to natural resources land use development demographics economics and City operations.

A Bachelors Degree in Urban Planning Urban Design Geography Engineering Public Administration Natural Resources or closely related field and at least one year of professional planning experience is required; or
A Masters Degree in Urban Planning Urban Design Geography Engineering Public Administration Natural Resources or closely related field is preferred.
Experience working in municipal setting or in the development of long range plans policy documents and regulations as well as performing technical research or data analysis is strongly preferred.
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is required within three years of hiring date. Failure to achieve certification may result in reclassification of the position and associated salary impacts.
Workplace Skills
Demonstrated knowledge of wide variety of planning issues development (zoning and subdivision) regulations and pertinent state and local regulations and to read development plans and other technical planning documents is required as well as demonstrated ability to obtain further working knowledge of applicable fields of practice.
Demonstrated working knowledge of a variety of software applications applied to planning practice urban data analysis and research including ESRI GIS products is required. Experience in using SketchUp Adobe Creative Suite and other similar applications is desirable.
Ability to quickly interpret data formats attributes their properties and recognize opportunities to apply spatial data in projects.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing orally and graphically and excellent interpersonal skills are required.
Professionalism tact and discretion in addressing controversial and emotionally charged issues and the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective employee and public relations.
Ability to work independently manage and prioritize multiple initiatives and to engage in collaborative decisionmaking.
Interest in contributing to the City of Burlington and improving the quality and effectiveness of governmental services.
Commitment to ongoing professional education and training to enhance jobbased knowledge and expertise.
