The department chair is responsible for the overall administration of the Department of Economics reporting to the deans of College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). The Chair will participate fully in administrative activities of both colleges. The chair is responsible for the overall fiscal management supervision of personnel hiring and assessment of faculty and staff oversight of the academic research as well as the Extension and outreach activities of the department.
Specific duties include:
Serve as departments advocate and pointofcontact with college administrations.
Identify with deans key areas for departmental development and action from among these topics (or others identified through consultation):
Revision Governance document
Defining excellence and differentiated approaches to Promotion and Tenure advancement and annual evaluation
Developing department Mission/Vision/Values: Stronger together understanding how the various fields within the department create resilience and opportunities for growth
Growing undergrad and grad enrollments and articulations
Represent the department at events and activities on and off campus including those outside the normal workday and requiring travel.
Facilitate the development and implementation of a strategic vision and goals to advance the internal and national reputation of the department in research education extension/outreach and/or service to the profession and broader community.
Set standards of excellence for all departmental activities.
Ensure that the academic undergraduate graduate and professional programs of the department are high quality accessible inclusive and relevant to the discipline. Foster a culture of excellence in teaching and learning pedagogy.
Identify and foster a culture of research and scholarly excellence.
Assess the progress and define annual goals for the department relative to the strategic plan document activities in an annual report and provide internal and external evaluations of the department including outcomes assessment as required by accreditation and/or ISU policy.
Ensure that departmental policies are established and clearly defined in the governance document including committee responsibilities faculty and staff hiring performance evaluation process promotion and advancement policies and distribution of financial resources. Ensure that all faculty and staff have knowledge and access to the governance document.
Mentor and support faculty in achieving their career aspirations as leading scholars educators and public servants.
Oversee promotion tenure and posttenure review of tenureeligible faculty; and advancement of term faculty in accordance with the ISU Faculty Handbook.
Conduct annual faculty and staff evaluations and support recognitions (awards) for outstanding performance. Encourage and support peer mentoring within the department.
Ensure efficient and effective departmental operations and staffing.
Ensure that all funds facilities resources and personnel awarded to the department are managed appropriately.
Maintain a balanced budget. Allocate departmental resources in recognition of priorities needs and performance.
Ensure a welcoming culture for faculty students and staff.
Ensure faculty with Agriculture Experiment Station funding have active projects and contribute to annual reports as required by state and federal regulations.
Contribute to Extension through supervision of Extension faculty based in the department and participate in development of plan of work documents and evaluation of Extension activities and programs.
