Job Description

Performs seniorlevel (highly complex) work. Work involves responding to routine complaints and calls for service investigating as needed to assist in the protection of the citys residents and property; enforcement of laws and ordinances and following departments policies and procedures applicable to span of control while preserving protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States of America. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Patrol Officer

Reports to: Patrol Sergeant

Community Services Officer

Reports to: Community Services Sergeant

Step: 2 and above

Additional Duties:

  • Frequent public speaking at public events when teaching classes to the public and when giving tours.
  • Coordinates attendance by patrol as needed for events.
  • Coordinates and teaches the citizens police academy.
  • Attends monthly meetings LCPAAA (Leander Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association) and the Leander Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
  • Attends the crime prevention group meetings.
  • Runs the departments Public Safety Cadets program maintaining the requirements of the program in staffing levels for instructors.
  • Speaks at events and other education needs.
  • Presents and updates power point presentations for community education and classes and creates new presentations as needed.


School Resource Officer

Reports to: Sergeant SRO

Step: 2and above

Additional Duties:

  • Works in assigned Leander school district schools within the city limits as an SRO

Additional Training:

  • Takes and maintains any required SRO training as mandated by TCOLE.


K9 Officer

Reports to: SIU Sergeant

Step: 2and above

Additional Duties:

  • Feeds and inspects the canine daily.
  • Provides clean sanitary and healthy living quarters and conditions for the canine.
  • Assumes responsibility for the canines actions and attempts to prevent the canine from being a nuisance to other officers personnel etc.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of applicable case law statutes and legal requirements concerning utilization of canines for searches.
  • Completes training procedures and exercises as prescribed by the instructors from training schools etc.
  • Maintains current canine and canine handler detection certification.
  • Assists patrol when necessary.


Officer Traffic

Reports to: Sergeant Traffic

Step: 2 and above

Additional Duties:

  • Assists with traffic trailer maintenance and deployment as assigned
  • Assists with wrecker compliance inspections and monitoring as assigned.
  • Assists patrol when necessary.


Officer Detective

Reports to: Sergeant CID

Step: 2 and above

Additional Duties:

  • Collects reviews and prepares evidence from crime scenes and death investigations while maintaining proper chain of custody for trial. This also includes video and audio recordings from crime scenes photographing the scenes and proper storage of this media.
  • As needed for the investigations issues citations and makes custody arrests.
  • Keeps records of activities and makes timely reports concerning all findings of investigations.
  • Shares information and works with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate. Prepares cases and presents them to grand juries district courts and county courts for review. Coordinates prosecution with district and county attorneys as required and testifies in court when required.
  • When not on duty maintains a rotating oncall status with other detectives for response as needed.
  • Works overflow cases and priority cases based on immediate need and priority of the case to include sexual assault cases Child Protective Services cases death investigation cases and violent and immediate threat cases.
  • Followup and communicates with victims on case status as appropriate.
  • Assists other specialized units when needed.
  • May work in special programs as assigned. These assignments may include CALEA proofs recruiting background investigations officer field training and attending civic and related functions in a public relations role.


SIU Officer

Reports to: Sergeant SIU

Step: 3 and above

Additional Duties:

  • Serves misdemeanor felony and municipal warrants from the department.
  • Plans coordinates and executes high risk warrant operations.
  • Service of outside agencies TCIC/NCIC warrants within the city.
  • Service of court process including witness summons subpoenas code enforcement summons.
  • Participates in prisoner extradition out of county and out of state.
  • Develops threat assessment packages on wanted subjects.
  • Assists patrol and CID as necessary.
  • Acts as court bailiff and provide judicial security.
  • May conduct sex offender registration compliance checks etc. as directed by the lieutenant.


Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer

Reports to: Sergeant Traffic

Step: 3 and above

Additional duties:

  • Performs complex technical and regulatory work to identify and report safety compliance or noncompliance status of vehicles and/or vehicle operators to ensure their compliance with federal regulations and Texas statutes and regulations while operating on public highways and roads.
  • Conducts safety inspections and quality assurance reviews of commercial motor vehicles and takes required actions in accordance with federal regulations and State law within DPS Policy/MOU Agreement.
  • Responds to telephone written or in person inquiries from the general public concerning commercial vehicle requirements.
  • Assists local and state law enforcement personnel on special investigations of commercial carrier operations and individuals regarding violations of the safety regulations.
  • During regular duty hours respond to crashes involving commercial motor vehicles occurring within the city.
  • Responds to hazardous material spill involving a commercial motor vehicle at the request of the Leander Fire Department.
  • Responsible for maintaining all requirements in the statement of work Memorandum of Understanding between The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Leander Police Department agreement.
  • Will routinely upload inspection data to DPS.
  • Responds to DataQs within the specified times when received from DPS MCB.
  • Assists corporal or sergeant as assigned with traffic trailer maintenance and deployment; traffic statistical reporting both annual and monthly; wrecker compliance inspections and monitoring.
  • Presents training as necessary for patrol officers in the area of commercial motor vehicles.


Officer PSD

Reports to: Sergeant Professional Standards

Step: 3 and above

Additional duties:

  • Schedules and coordinates related fieldtraining orientation for new employees.
  • Assists with management of the records in the various software systems for training.
  • Assists with management of the FTO program by setting schedules for probationary officers and field training officers and ensures that their training is progressing at a normal rate.
  • Assists with maintaining yearly schedule for training in compliance with CALEA standards and any additional department needs.
  • Assists with management of recruiting and hiring process overall schedule including postings academy recruiting trips ordering and administering written tests administering ability testing oral boards backgrounds and chiefs interview.
  • Assists in ensuring F5R obtained for each licensed applicant prior to background investigation and completed as required by Administrative Law.


Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Graduate or its equivalent.


Required Certificate and Licenses:

  • Valid Class C drivers license from any state. Must be able to obtain a Texas drivers license within 90 days of hire date.
  • Currently a licensed peace officer with TCOLE license.
    1. If from out of state already have obtained a TCOLE license and be eligible for intermediate certificate upon completion of required courses.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited college or university or technical school.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
