Description of role:

TWI is a worldrenowned centre of excellence in engineering training and certification serving industry leaders across the globe. With a heritage spanning decades TWI has built a reputation for technical authority innovation and integrity in supporting the development of individuals and organisations alike.

The TWI Technology roadmap includes two areas in nonmetallics (polymerbased structures with or without reinforcement) that are central to our offering and expertise:

  • Improved prediction of welded integrity and service life of composite joints:
    • Understanding and mapping defects in composites in order to incorporate to integrity models
    • Measurement of time dependant material property degradation (creep physical ageing chemical ageing)
  • New understanding of materials failure in industrial relevant environment
    • Develop capability for testing nonmetallics in environments dominated by CO2 and inclusive of other chemical species (oxides water sour environments)
    • Develop methodologies for damage mechanisms characterisation in polymers and composites that can be utilised for fitnessforservice assessments

In order to develop the above areas we are seeking a senior engineer with international and demonstrable experience in understanding physical and chemical phenomena that take place in commercial polymer grades when subjected to service conditions in various environments. Detailed understanding of damage mechanisms in polymers and composites (especially fracture initiation and damage propagation) will enable asset degradation predictions for nonmetallic assets. These predictions can lead to the development of fitness for service methodologies which are in demand by industry as nonmetallic assets in service progress through their designed service life.

The ideal candidate will have contributed to the understanding of polymers and composites performance through submission of scientific papers to peer reviewed journals for at least 15 years. They will have proven leadership skills in independent thinking and a successful track record of winning research grants.
