Geologist Siliciclastics Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Geologist Siliciclastics to play a key role in advancing the mapping and stratigraphic understanding of Cretaceous and Paleogene siliciclastic formations in southern Alberta. This work will deliver critical geological mapping insights into the quality quantity and location of groundwater across the region in support of the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation project.
This role will support the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) project funded by the Government of Alberta. The AGS SAGE project is a multiyear initiative designed to enhance the understanding of groundwater resources in southern Alberta and assist the province in identifying potential aquifer systems. An inventory of groundwater availability and chemical quality will be completed for aquifers that have been previously unmapped.
What your daytoday will look like:
Apply a comprehensive understanding of subsurface geology to support project goals by collecting analyzing and validating data from multiple sources and integrating data and information using a variety of software.
Interpret stratigraphy structure and depositional environments of Cretaceous and Paleogene siliciclastic formations using integrated data sets (core well log water well lithologs electromagnetic surveys etc.) and provide interpretation on the geological history and aquifer characteristics.
Conduct detailed petrophysical analysis of well log data to evaluate interpret and map the physical and chemical properties of rock and fluids in siliciclastic formations at both a local and regional scales. Emphasis will be on key aquifer properties such as lithology shale volume porosity permeability water saturation and coal seam characterization.
Conduct field work and core sample data analysis to assess porosity permeability and water saturation levels at local and regional scales supporting or leading efforts to confirm project findings.
Disseminate information data and knowledge in geological maps and reports in a manner that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the AGS and the Alberta Energy Regulator.
Plan and manage field projects including safety aspects and supervision of field staff.
Interact with peers in universities and provincial government departments.
What were looking for in you:
Postgraduate degree ideally an . or Ph.D. in geology or a related field
57 years of relevant industry academia or government geoscience experience.
Extensive knowledge of siliciclastic rocks including sedimentary processes in fluvial and coastal plain depositional environments diagenesis and oil/gas resource estimation.
Expertise in petrophysical analysis (porosity permeability saturation coal characterization etc.) and strong understanding of coal bearing formations of the Alberta Basin.
Experience using electromagnetic geophysical data acquired from airborne or groundbased surveys is an asset.
Proficiency in geological software (e.g. Kingdom) data analysis tools (e.g. ArcGIS Pro) and familiarity with geological modeling techniques.
Ability and willingness to undertake field work in remote areas of southern Alberta and core data analysis at the Core Research Centre in Calgary or Mineral Core Research Facility in Edmonton.
Experience applying geological knowledge to issues related to groundwater is advantageous.
Demonstrated analytical research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply creative thinking to resolve complex issues.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (preferably demonstrated by one or more publications).
