Job Description
Summary of Duties
The OTA&PTA receives assignments from Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists and collaborates with members of the interprofessional team to promote a safe caring environment for residents and patients in the Veterans Program.
- Prepare organize plan and provide individual and group therapy with assigned patients under the direction of a registered Physiotherapist and/or Occupational Therapist.
- Therepaeutic activities may include but are not limited to; strengthening range of motion progress ADLs and function as per treatment plan gait training balance training exercise classes providing physical assistance to PT/OT during assessment/ treatment etc.
- Complete common wheelchair repairs; assist with setup of wheelchair and seating products
- Conduct training sessions for way finding and power mobility use
- Progress ADLs and function as per treatment plan
- Maintain accurate workload reporting and document via electronic documentation according to the model of care in the Veterans Centre.
- Participate regularly in interprofessional care team business and professional council meetings.
- Directly supervise OTA/PTA students as assigned.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of therapeutic supplies assessment and resource forms and kitchen supplies.
- Provide preventive maintenance to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy equipment.
- Maintain regular communication with PTs and OTs regarding any changes or concerns about resident/ patients program or their health status as well as ongoing communication with the interprofessional team.
- Ensure the ongoing integrity and function of therapeutic equipment and treatment areas.
- Conduct work in a safe manner; prevention identification and reporting of safety issues and problems; taking corrective action where possible; attendance at safety meetings / training / updates in accordance with the Hospitals standards.
- Participates on appropriate committees pertaining to the operation of the unit/ service and participates in disciplinespecific activities within Sunnybrook
Qualifications/Skills:
- OTA /PTA diploma from a recognized OTA/PTA program
- Previous experience working with older adults is an asset
- Interest in working therapeutically with residents palliative care and transitional care patients required
- Well developed skills in time management problem solving skills required
- Excellent oral written and nonverbal communication skills required
- Demonstrate understanding of compensatory and remediation principles
- Ability to communicate and work successfully in an interprofessional team environment
- Ability to use hand tools (e.g. for wheelchair repairs)
- Demonstrate professional judgement and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients families and interprofessional team
- Proven ability to be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
- Basic knowledge of wheelchairs and seating products preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to PersonCentred Care
