Job Description

Summary of Duties

The OTA&PTA receives assignments from Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists and collaborates with members of the interprofessional team to promote a safe caring environment for residents and patients in the Veterans Program.

  1. Prepare organize plan and provide individual and group therapy with assigned patients under the direction of a registered Physiotherapist and/or Occupational Therapist.
  2. Therepaeutic activities may include but are not limited to; strengthening range of motion progress ADLs and function as per treatment plan gait training balance training exercise classes providing physical assistance to PT/OT during assessment/ treatment etc.
  3. Complete common wheelchair repairs; assist with setup of wheelchair and seating products
  4. Conduct training sessions for way finding and power mobility use
  5. Progress ADLs and function as per treatment plan
  6. Maintain accurate workload reporting and document via electronic documentation according to the model of care in the Veterans Centre.
  7. Participate regularly in interprofessional care team business and professional council meetings.
  8. Directly supervise OTA/PTA students as assigned.
  9. Monitor and maintain inventory of therapeutic supplies assessment and resource forms and kitchen supplies.
  10. Provide preventive maintenance to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy equipment.
  11. Maintain regular communication with PTs and OTs regarding any changes or concerns about resident/ patients program or their health status as well as ongoing communication with the interprofessional team.
  12. Ensure the ongoing integrity and function of therapeutic equipment and treatment areas.
  13. Conduct work in a safe manner; prevention identification and reporting of safety issues and problems; taking corrective action where possible; attendance at safety meetings / training / updates in accordance with the Hospitals standards.
  14. Participates on appropriate committees pertaining to the operation of the unit/ service and participates in disciplinespecific activities within Sunnybrook

Qualifications/Skills:

  1. OTA /PTA diploma from a recognized OTA/PTA program
  2. Previous experience working with older adults is an asset
  3. Interest in working therapeutically with residents palliative care and transitional care patients required
  4. Well developed skills in time management problem solving skills required
  5. Excellent oral written and nonverbal communication skills required
  6. Demonstrate understanding of compensatory and remediation principles
  7. Ability to communicate and work successfully in an interprofessional team environment
  8. Ability to use hand tools (e.g. for wheelchair repairs)
  9. Demonstrate professional judgement and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients families and interprofessional team
  10. Proven ability to be responsible for carrying out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  11. Basic knowledge of wheelchairs and seating products preferred
  12. Demonstrated commitment to PersonCentred Care
