Job Description
Purpose of Position:
The Dispatcher plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient timely and costeffective movement of freight. This position is responsible for coordinating driver schedules assigning loads communicating with customers and internal teams and proactively resolving delivery or pickup issues.
The dispatcher ensures compliance with safety regulations optimizes routing and maintains service excellence by supporting drivers and the operations team.
Key Accountabilities:
- Driver Dispatch & Coordination:
- Assign and dispatch drivers for scheduled deliveries and pickups ensuring efficient routing and time management
- Route Optimization:
- Plan and adjust routes to reduce travel time minimize fuel usage and meet customer delivery expectations
- Communication Management:
- Serve as the main point of contact for drivers during their shift; provide clear instructions and timely updates
- Service Reliability:
- Monitor shipments to ensure ontime performance and proactively address any delays or issues with appropriate solutions
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure all dispatch activities comply with federal and provincial transportation regulations including driver hoursofservice rules
- System Accuracy:
- Accurately input and maintain distich records tracking information and communication logs in dispatch and ELD systems
- Customer Services:
- Communicate with customers regarding freight status delivery windows and any issues maintaining professionalism and responsiveness
- Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with crossdock warehouse and operations team to coordinate freight movement and prioritize urgent shipments
- Problem Solving:
- Manage onthe road incidents or breakdowns by quickly implementing contingency plans and dispatching support when needed
- Reporting & Updates:
- Provide endofday summaries or updates to management on performance metrics issues encountered and improvement opportunities
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; postsecondary education in logistics supply chain or a related field is an asset
- Minimum 2 years of experience in dispatching logistics coordination or transportation operations
- Strong understanding of transportation regulations including Hours ofServices (HOS) and safety compliance
- Proficient in dispatch software GPS tracking systems and Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong problemsolving and decisionmaking abilities especially in highpressure situations
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fastpaced environment
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility to work varied shifts including early mornings evening or weekends if required
