***The Department of Corrections is currently offering a hire incentive bonus of up to $15000.00 to newly hired Corrections Nurses 2. The incentive bonus will be paid in two equal installments minus mandatory deductions. The first installment will be paid 90 calendar days after the first day of employment and upon demonstrating an overall midacceptable performance rating. The second and final installment will be paid upon the employees successful completion of the probationary period. Payments will be due within sixty (60) calendar days of such request. To receive an incentive employees are expected to agree to a threeyear term of employment with the Department of Corrections.***


The Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services is recruiting for a Corrections Nurse 2 positionat the Fairbanks Correctional Center (FCC) located in Fairbanks Alaska.

You Will Be Doing:

The primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide general nursing care to patients to include triage and assessment
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments
  • Provide participate and assist in therapeutic activities
  • Observe document and report changes in the physical and mental conditions of the inmates to include maintaining patient medical records
  • Handle crisis situations in a calm and effective manner

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Correctional Nurses working at the Fairbanks Correctional Center can expect a patient population of about 235 individuals. Nurses will need to become fluent in our policies procedures and protocols have a deep understanding of their scope of practice and be comfortable practicing in a highly autonomous setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;
AND EITHER
Successful completion of a formal training plan as a Corrections Nurse I with the State of Alaska;
OR
One year of entry level experience as a Registered Nurse. Examples of this experience include but are not exclusively limited to prior service as a Corrections Nurse I Psychiatric Nurse I or Nurse I with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g. MedSurg Psychiatric Public Health Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a casebycase basis.

Special Note:
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska and requisite qualifying experience may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.

Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation including fingerprinting as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.

Some positions may require the successful applicant to provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire. Employees are required to be tested annually. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.

Starting salary may be approved up to Step D $55.27 if criteria are met.

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

PREA NOTIFICATION

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including but not limited to Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. Please be aware this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
