Job Description

Overview

Utah State University Eastern in Price Utah is seeking a qualified MSHA certified instructor to fill an Assistant Mine Trainer position.

This position is funded by a DOL MSHA grant and is subject to funding constraints.

This positions primary role is training individuals in accordance with MSHA standards for underground and surface mine work.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit plan organize schedule and deliver MSHA safety training for mines statewide.
  • Consult with small mine operators and contractors through job site visits and telephone conversations to help plan and recommend MSHA required and other site specific safety training according to mine operator/contractor MSHA approved training pla
  • Develop MSHA approved training plans to share with mines.
  • Prepare and deliver annual refresher training for underground and surface miners complying with Title 30 CFR Part 48 and Part 46.
  • Prepare and deliver required new miner training for surface miners under MSHA Title 30 CFR Parts 48 and 46.
  • Prepare and deliver required new miner training for underground miners under MSHA Title 30 CFR Part 48.
  • Prepare and deliver workshops seminars and training to enhance the skills safety and competency level of Utahs mining workforce.
  • Prepare and submit appropriate and timely progress reports required by a contract.
  • Maintain current MSHA instructor certification.
  • Maintain current knowledge of MSHA regulations and standards.
  • Possess operational knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Prepare and deliver training meeting requirements of mine operator/contractor MSHA training plans for appropriate safety training as verified by administrative training assessments.
  • Evaluate existing and develop MSHA related sitespecific safety curriculum utilizing multimedia and effective instructional design integrating student engagement techniques.
  • Meet the Utah MSHA State Grant Program organizational goals and expectations for recruiting registering and training the targeted market share of mineworkers and contractors.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • High Schools diploma or GED. College preferred.
  • Valid Utah drivers license to perform essential job responsibilities such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials.
  • Selfstarter who can work with minimal supervision
  • Proficient communication and instruction skills in a classroom environment.
  • Minimum of five (5) years mining experience surface and/or underground.
  • Two (2) years verifiable teaching/training experience including safety meetings training classes mining subjects taught and other classes taught (e.g. OSHA).
  • MSHA instructor certification.
  • Willingness to travel on occasion and visit with mine operators and contractors and train workers throughout Utah.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years mining experience in Mine Safety and Training.
  • MSHA electrical certifications.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors in an office space event space or public space are protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment and conditions that may affect the respiratory system such as fumes odors dusts mists gases and poor ventilation. Bending crawling and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift push and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
