NOTE:This is a Civil Service position and this recruitment will establish an employment Eligibility List (valid for one year) to fill current and future Processing Technician vacancies throughout the Sheriffs Office. You can access King County Civil Service Rules atCivil Service Rules

The Processing Technician position is a great opportunity to start or advance a career in forensic science. This classification primarily responds independently to requests for crime scene and evidence processing utilizing basic techniques to develop and preserve latent fingerprint and DNA evidence adhering to standard safety and anticontamination protocols safeguarding chain of custody to maintain evidence integrity while also providing a high level of customer service to the citizens and law enforcement partners throughout King County.

Processing Technicians work in the Latent Processing Unit of the King County Regional AFIS Program under the Criminal Investigations Division of the King County Sheriffs Office. The main location is the Blackriver Building located in Renton. Work is primarily performed at crime scenes police facilities and tow yards throughout King County.

WORK SCHEDULE: This fulltime overtime eligible Civil Service position follows a standard 40hour workweek typically structured as four 10hour shifts. The unit operates seven days a week and currently provides coverage during day and swing shift hours with occasional afterhours response required for high priority incidents. Assigned days off may vary and are subject to rotation at the discretion of management. Additional hours beyond the regular schedule may also be required.


Job Duties

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the position including but not limited to:
Knowledge of latent print processing techniques and best practices for preserving analyzing and determining if fingerprint impressions are suitable for comparison .
Ability to comprehend and follow directions in verbal written and digital formats as well as interpreting incomplete address information (e.g. cross streets or city block references to accurately locate scenes)
At least one year of customer service experience
Strong writing skills to compose edit and maintain a variety of documents and electronic records often subject to law enforcement review and used in judicial proceedings demonstrating correct spelling grammar punctuation and meticulous attention to detail
Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate simple and complex concepts with law enforcement victims of crimes and jurors
Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively convey information to customers in person by phone or in writing including adherence to standard operating procedures and compliance criteria for of a forensic laboratory accredited under ISO 17020
Ability to screen calls schedule processing and respond to requests from internal and external partners in law enforcement
Demonstrate ability to problem solve unique situations
Show critical thinking and situational awareness abilities
Demonstrate the ability to multitask and complete various work tasks efficiently while maintaining accuracy
Ability to follow security procedures and regulations related to the dissemination of information that is confidential and sensitive in nature
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook) and database applications or other relevant software


Highly Desirable Qualifications
: The most competitive candidates in addition to meeting the Qualifications listed above will have:
Previous fingerprint processing or evidence handling experience
Previous leadership or independent decisionmaking experience
A bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university
Crime scene certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI) or any other forensic discipline


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must be able to work with deceased bodies bodily fluids other biologic materials controlled or unknown substances hazardous chemicals and firearms in a professional and safe manner
Must be able to stand walk bend and lift items for extended periods of time in nonclimatecontrolled environments
Availability to work rotating shifts including nights weekends and holidays and demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality
Must upon hire submit an elimination buccal swab DNA sample to be entered into CODIS
Valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to travel independently in a safe and timely manner to unfamiliar locations throughout King County
Offers of employment are contingent on passing a thorough background investigation physical exam and polygraph examination
