This is a 1.0 FTE continuing contract Life Academics teaching position at Columbia Elementary School effective theschool year.

Life Academicsis a structured program designed to meet the needs of students with significant global delays. Students primary instructional needs are in functional communication (expressing basic needs and use of foundational AAC) adaptive (toileting feeding and eating and functional mobility) and functional academic skills (sensorybased learning activities participating in class routines exposure to literacy and math). Students have cognitive delays which result in the need for instruction using individualized alternate curriculum. Instruction in the Life Academicsclassroom is often provided individually or in small groups of 23 students targeting functional academic skills and adaptive school routines. Program paraeducators support students throughout the school setting with the goal of building social and community interactions to support quality of life. Students in the Life Academicsprogram participate in the WAAIM alternate assessment.

Class size: Up to 13 students with a teacher and 3 classroom paraeducators.

Minimum Qualifications:Valid Washington state teaching certificate witha special education endorsement.

JOB TITLE: SPECIAL SERVICES TEACHER

JOB SUMMARY: Plan prepare and deliver a quality educational program based upon state standards district curriculum IEP goals and effective instruction to students with diverse needs.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan and provide clear and intentional focused instruction based upon individual student IEP goals using state standards subject matter content and district curriculum.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs for the purpose of promoting individual achievement.
  • Implement effective teaching practices for the purpose of facilitating achievement for each student.
  • Use multiple student data elements for the purpose of assessing student progress modifying instruction and improving student learning.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and school community for the purpose of fostering student success and achievement and meeting special education laws and policies.
  • Foster and manage a safe positive learning environment for the purpose of promoting effective student behavior and success.
  • Maintain and submit information/records including student progress.
  • Participate in and facilitate various meetings for the purpose of addressing student goals and needs and to meet laws and policies. Meetings may include school and department manifestation determination eligibility evaluation and placement.
  • Maintain and process accurate records/documents as required by State and Federal regulations and district policy.
  • Direct the work of assigned classified staff.
  • Implement and comply with District policies and the Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the supervisor

JOB REQUIREMENTS; MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Skills Knowledge and Abilitiesrequired to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

  • Knowledge of applicable Washington State and federal rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of subject matter/course content relevant to assignment.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using effective instructional strategies and practices.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using various formative and summative assessments.
  • Ability to effectively address a wide range of academic and social needs including atrisk cultural diversity English language learners and special education students.
  • Knowledge and skill in designing and conducting specialized instruction remediation and evaluation.
  • Skills in managing and promoting positive student behavior.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively meet students developmental needs.
  • Ability to interact and collaborate positively and effectively with parents students staff and administrators.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats with a variety of constituents.
  • Skills and abilities in organization time management and record keeping.
  • Ability to operate technology devices and specific software programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability and commitment to strengthen jobrelated competencies.

EDUCATION:

  • Valid Washington State certification with appropriate endorsement(s)
  • Meet highly qualified requirements relative to assignment

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful experience as a special education teacher preferred
  • Second language or language acquisition background preferred
  • Student cultural and economic diversity experience preferred
