Are you a Registered Sanitarian seeking a pivotal role where you can directly impact environmental health and enjoy significant autonomy The Environmental Enforcement Specialist supports the departments enforcement activities by preparing and filing enforcement actions against violators of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code (MCEHC) Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C) and Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S) to obtain compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. This position also supports the departments inspection activities by investigating citizen complaints related to suspected violations of environmental nuisance regulations and working with applicable parties to gain compliance. The employee is expected to exercise considerable initiative and judgment in planning and carrying out assignments.

We Require
Two years of increasingly responsible professional experience that may include environmental inspection enforcement environmental compliance or training
Bachelors degree in environmental health microbiology entomology chemistry food science or related field with 30 semester hours of natural physical or applied science coursework
Registered Sanitarian in good standing with the Arizona Department of Health Services
We Also Value
Experience in mediation and dispute/or conflict resolution
Court processes and procedures to include legal documentation writing reports and preparing correspondence
Experience in a police or court setting
Job Contributions
Conducts field investigations in response to citizen complaints regarding suspected violations of environmental regulations. Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and conducts reinspection as required to document compliance. Includes accurate notetaking and taking photographs.
Documents inspection findings facts and evidence and prepares enforcement actions for supervisorial review using standard templates. Recommends enforcement action based on established policies and regulations.
Prepares and delivers environmental nuisance violation notices including details of alleged facts correction actions ordered and proposed penalties.
Reviews program legal action requests inspection reports facts and evidence and adherence to enforcement policies. Prepares appropriate enforcement actions under MCEHC A.A.C. and A.R.S. regulations.
Represents the department as an enforcement liaison in meetings with regulated parties to gain compliance with applicable regulations.
Assists stakeholders by answering questions about departmental processes and enforcement procedures. Attends meetings with governmental agencies.
Conducts ridealongs and/or job shadowing to assist in training department staff on proper enforcement procedures and techniques.
Coordinates joint inspections with other county department staff on multijurisdictional cases.
Provides testimony as an expert witness in department hearings and court proceedings.
Working Conditions
Ability to lift up to 2025 lbs. occasionally 1025 lbs. frequently or up to 10 lbs. constantly
The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties & responsibilities the employee maybe exposed to loud noise noxious odors unsanitary conditions chemicals electricity moving mechanical parts varying weather conditions and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes odors dust mists gases or poor ventilation.
Exposed to outdoor climate conditions and indoor commercial environments that are sometimes wet unsanitary and hot. Protective clothing (i.e. hard hat steel toes shoes) is necessary in some environments.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Drivers license by the time of hire
Office of Pest Management Applicator Certification shall be completed within 90 days of hire
Attend the Western States Project Arizona Introduction to Environmental Enforcement conference within 12 months of hire
The position is eligible for hybrid and alternative schedules after training based on business needs
