Job Description

Job Title:Early Childhood Educator Safe Haven (Pending Funding and Union Approval)

Status: Temporary parttime (Union position)

Number of Vacancies:1

Wage:$25.95 $29.76/hour (starting$25.95/hour)

Grid:10

Hours: 14 Hours/Week

Schedule:Monday Thursday 9:15 AM 12:45 PM

The Opportunity:

As part of the Safe Haven Program team the Early ChildhoodEducator provides a caring and positive learning environment for children forour Safe Haven English Counselling Settlement and Employment programs. Theprimary responsibilities for this position are planning preparing anddelivering daily early childhood educational activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plans carries out and evaluates developmentally appropriate activities and experiences for children using modelling observing questioning demonstrating and reinforcing techniques.
  • Develops daily program schedules that include indoor/outdoor active/quiet and individual and group activities.
  • Identifies childrens abilities interests and needs and develops individualized and group curricula based on these. Recommends referrals or additional services or works in consultation with professionals such as behavioural therapists occupational therapists and speechlanguage pathologists.
  • Reports on progress behaviours and other issues related to children. Contributes to reports for children moving on to elementary school. Maintains required records and statistics.
  • Participates in preschool planning and evaluation of the organizations programs. Provides recommendations for changes to the supervisor and Safe Haven Program Management.
  • Provides work direction to early childhood educator assistants as required.
  • Attends to the childrens physical needs which may include diapering toileting eating and sleeping.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established policy.
  • Ensures a healthy and safe environment in which the children can interact. Identifies and removes potential hazards.
  • Communicates with families about childrens growth and development. Requests input from and participation of parents in the development of programs. Confers with parents about unusual or problematic issues.
  • Works with the Safe Haven Management team to establish working hours and children attendance for reporting and budgeting purposes.
  • Displays alertness and is responsive to childrens needs at all times fostering a caring and positive learning environment;
  • Leads children in activities telling stories teaching songs and leading discussions;
  • Guides and assists children in the development of appropriate life skills and interactive behaviour;
  • Ensures the safety and hygiene of all children;
  • Reports instances of suspected child abuse to the daycare coordinator;
  • Adheres to the Centres guidelines for discipline and managing behaviours appropriately;
  • Maintains the cleanliness of equipment and supplies;
  • Adheres to DIVERSEcity and personnel policies procedures and practices.

Qualified Candidates will possess:

  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education;
  • Two years experience working in a day care environment or similar;
  • Early Childhood Educators license to practice;
  • Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of young children;
  • Multicultural or crosscultural experience;
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment;
  • Standard First Aid training;
  • TB test clearance;

A criminal record check is a condition of employment.
