The Orthopedic Tech 1 MA is responsible for application and removal of casts including complex casting and orthopedic splints and devices. The position has a significant amount of patient contact and is typically involved in the team assessment of patient needs and fitting/finishing services of patients. The Orthopedic Tech 1 MA ensures the proper maintenance record keeping and ordering of tools equipment and/or inventory. This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic bracing and casting related activities. Positions allocated to this level are responsible for application modification repair and fitting of a wide variety of casts splints and braces. Casting activities include application of upper and lower extremity casts from simple to complex using a variety of materials; arrange assemble and adjust traction equipment; apply and adjust braces and splints; and remove sutures and staples. The Orthopedic Tech 1 MA will also assist in stocking and ordering of supplies. Clinical work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed patient care professional or supervisory staff.
Experience Minimum of two years experience in an orthopedic clinic and/or hospital setting.
Education Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
Training Completion of Certified Orthopedic Technology training program preferred. Completion of an Allied Health program in a related field with Surgical Assist program preferred.
Special Skills Ability to apply and remover casts and splinter.
Ability to assemble and adjust traction equipment.
Ability to maintain quality control standards.
Ability to multitask efficiently and take direction of multiple sources.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients medical staff and the public.
Ability to assist in a variety of treatments as directed.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.
Excellent telephone skills.
Computer literate: Ability to document care performed in electronic medical record.
Licensure American Heart Association BLS Certification
