Job Description
The Public Utilities Commissions of Ohio (PUCO) affect nearly every household in Ohio. The PUCO regulates providers of all types of utility services which include electric and natural gas companies local and longdistance telephone water and wastewater and rail and trucking companies. More recently the PUCO gained responsibility for facilitating competitive utility choices for Ohio consumers.
To carry out our responsibilities the PUCO employs a professional staff that includes engineers economists attorneys and safety inspectors. Continually monitoring the activities of utility and transportation companies the PUCO works to ensure safe and reliable services for all Ohioans.

30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. investigative exp. with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description; valid drivers license.
Or Completion of associate core program in law enforcement criminal justice or in academic field commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved Position Description on file; 12 mos. exp. conducting investigations &/or inspections; valid drivers license.
Or 30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. exp. as Investigator Assistant 26210 with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description; valid drivers license.
Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

About the Transportation Department:
The Transportation Departments mission is to facilitate safe and secure commercial transportation on public highways railroads and transportation facilities as well as to promote quality and equitable service in a proactive manner for the public and commercial carriers in the household goods bus and ferry boat industries. This is accomplished through reduction and prevention of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles reduction and prevention of hazardous materials incidents development of consumer protection regulations and resolution of consumer and carrier complaints.
What Youll Do:
This position as a Safety Investigator includes but not limited to the following:
- Independently conduct safety compliance audits and inspections on nonhazardous material commercial motor carrier operations records and equipment
- Travels in state vehicle within designated area to perform Safety Audits (SAs) Compliance Reviews (CRs and driver/vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulatory requirements
- Reviews driver duty status billsoflanding driver qualification records logbooks equipment/maintenance records and carrier equipment inspections
- Provides education to carriers regarding compliance with safety regulations
- Formulates conclusions and prepares detailed reports of compliance and safety audits and inspections
- May respond to complaints from public and regulated industry regarding violations of laws governing commercial motor vehicle transportation within the State of Ohio
- Required to pass initial training and maintain federal certifications to remain in position

Salary Information:Unless required by legislation or union contract starting salary is set at the lowest rate of the salary range. In most cases successful employees will increase a step in the salary range within six months with subsequent step increases occurring every year. In addition the State of Ohio offers cost of living adjustments longevity supplements after five years of public service and wellness incentives.
