This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin TX three times per week at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business if more than 3 days.

The Role

General Motors uses telematics data as a cornerstone of its softwaredefined vehicle strategy enhancing safety security and product development for an exceptional customer experience. Analytical insights from this data lead to improvements in operational efficiency maintenance and vehicle performance as well as address the need for intelligent (ADAS) sustainable transportation (EV). Our data storage team owns the platform that streams and stores this data from millions of vehicles around the globe.

We seek a polyglot engineer with a strong background in data and software experienced in designing and maintaining largescale systems. This technical leadership role requires a passion for quality efficiency and reliability. As a staff engineer youll lead and build the platform to enable thousands of use cases that require telematics data. You will play a key role in our teams success supporting hundreds of internal consumers and enhancing the experience for millions of retail and fleet customers. This is a highvisibility role!

What Youll Do

  • Develop a scalable data platform to support continuing increases in data volume and complexity
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines to ingest process curate and store large volumes of data using Spark Kafka Event Hub Azure Data Lake Storage or similar technologies
  • Support the infrastructure required for optimal ingestion transformation and storing of data
  • Collaborate with data scientists and analysts to support the needs of advanced ML development
  • Design and implement rigorous data observability validation governance and quality checks
  • Defines and leads corporate software strategy for new technology highly complex features or significant enhancements for current new or major programs.
  • Provide technical leadership to execution teams for development and integration.
  • Leads comprehensive design analysis of design solution.
  • Lead integration and verification testing f an integrated software build.
  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products and defines GM direction.
  • Provide communicate and support common best practices among software community.
  • Performs as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for one or more platform or application components.
  • Actively participates in hiring development of technical questionnaires resume reviews and performs interviews
  • Participates in project eligible for patent application
  • Visibility: across Infotainment teams and sites
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Mentor and support junior engineers by providing guidance coaching and educational opportunities

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in data engineering including Python or Scala SQL and relational/nonrelational data storage
  • 5 years of experience in distributed petabytescale data processing using Spark as well as container orchestration technologies like Kubernetes
  • Expert at performance tuning strategies such as partitioning clustering caching and various other serialization techniques
  • Expert at infrastructure as code (IaC) and CI/CD best practices
  • Strong background in data architecture and modeling techniques to optimize for data consumption patterns
  • Proven cloud experience and strong familiarity with at least one cloud platform (Microsoft Azure preferred AWS GCP)
  • Excellent teamwork and leadership skills to collaborate and influence across product program and engineering

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Masters degree in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related field
  • Strong background in data governance metadata management and/or data quality/observability
  • Knowledge in schema design and data contracts
  • Experience in processing and storing various file formats including video audio and image
  • Experience with tools such as Databricks or Snowflake this is where the vast majority of our downstream consumers live

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.

Compensation:

  • The expected base compensation for this role is: $165000 $253200. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential:An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance job level and individual performance.
