Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) is accepting applications for a Correctional Captain. Responsibilities include providing supervision and training to staff coordinating and monitoring investigations and assessing security and threats to the facility residents and staff at Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston ME.
Duties:
- Develop implement train and monitor the SII team as it relates to investigation within the facility.
- Monitors and evaluates current security practices and programs to identify and provide recommendation to ensure the safety of residents staff and visitors.
- Identify and assign team to conduct investigations of alleged criminal activity or law violations.
- Leads investigations involving highly responsible and confidential cases regarding alleged violations of security threats Department Rules Administrative Directives or criminal offenses by residents staff and visitors.
- Coordinate and monitor the evidence collection processes and policies to maintain consistency in the application of policies procedures and guidelines.
- Research and recommend new investigative equipment to better identify document and investigate the conduct of staff residents and visitors.
- Identifying the facts and findings in investigations and reviews all reports for clarity accuracy and completeness prior to submittal.
- Ensure training and required certification are achieved by your specialty teams.
- Make recommendations in administrative investigations.
- Develop and maintain departmentwide system security protocols associated with Access Integrity Activities.
- Ensure adherence to all safety codes and regulations for the Department.
- Implement operational procedures.
- Monitor and oversee staff to maintain institutional security safety and order ensuring safe operations at all hours.
- Prepare for and react to situations perceived to be emergencies or potential emergencies.
- Maintain all required certifications such as Basic Corrections Training Program (BCTP) Firearms certification Mechanics of Arrest Restraint and Control (MARC) and Mechanics of Effective Restraint and Control (MERC).

- Interviewing and investigative techniques principles and practices.
- Correctional institution rules regulations policies and procedures.
- The community and its needs to develop and coordinate resources and programs to reduce crime.
- Federal state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to violent crime.
- Methods and techniques used in surveillance and developing information sources.
- Research methods techniques and practices.
- Departmental laws rules policies and standard operating procedures.
- Legal requirements related to the chain of custody of evidence collection evidence recognition and evidence preservation.
- Judicial systems to include legal processes court room procedures and rules of evidence.
- Criminal code laws rules and regulations applicable to and enforced by the Department.
- Methods and techniques used in surveillance and undercover activities.
- Communications and specialized investigative equipment.
Ability To:
- Collect analyze and evaluate evidence records and data.
- Conduct indepth investigations ascertain facts and form logical conclusions.
- Establish and maintain effective working collaborations with other local state and federal law enforcement agencies to successfully lead work teams.
- Remain calm when handling critical emotionally charged and demanding situations while modeling appropriate behavior attitude ethics and morals.
- Communicate clearly and effectively orally verbally and in writing.
- Use and maintain a firearm.
- Testify in court and administrative proceedings.
- Prioritize investigative assignments and handle difficult and unusual problems.
- Make decisions and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations.
- Respond to emergencies including nights weekends and holidays.
- Supervise subordinate staff residents and clients.
- Use computer programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five (5) years of education training and/or experience in correctional institution security and/orresident care and custody programs which includes at least two years of responsible correctional supervisory experience.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:(These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).
Successful completion of the Maine Criminal Justice Academys Law Enforcement PreService Course (LEPS).
