TheTransit Police Departmentis one of the fastest growing law enforcement agencies in the state due the expansion of light rail and Rapid Transit Bus systems. There is an authorized strength of 171 fulltime officers 80 parttime officers 55 community service officers and 40 administrative staff dedicated to one thing: public safety on and near our transit system.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

ThePolice Evidence Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and management of the Property and Evidence Unit and BodyWorn Camera/Digital Video Program. This includes oversight of physical and digital evidence intake storage and disposal maintaining chain of custody supporting courtrelated evidence needs managing body worn camera and fleet video systems and ensuring compliance with laws and department policy related to digital and physical evidence.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of experienceworking in law enforcement or similar government position with police evidence (physical and digital) system technology project management data practices and process improvement or related andcompleted educationin Business Administration Information Technology Project Management Law Enforcement or closely related field.

Valid drivers license with acceptable record is required.

*Metropolitan Council Employees Only:Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.

Project Management Development Program (12monthsession) 1 year
Project Management Development Program (6monthsession) 6 months
Four Learning Institute Certificates You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • 2 to 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong technical skills in both Digital and Physical Evidence intake storage retention and purging and evidence handling.
  • Experience with and knowledge of state statutes and criminal court procedures.
  • Experience with law enforcement programs including records management systems evidence management systems and court records systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively both orally and in writing with staff stakeholders and other agencies and with a customer service focus when working with the general public.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of internal and external customers.


What knowledge skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of law enforcement technology.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of project management.
  • Knowledge of payroll processes and regulations within multi contract union environments.
  • Knowledge of workers compensation claims.
  • Knowledge of personnel management and leadership principles.
  • Knowledge of CJIS compliance and data practices laws.
  • Knowledge of handling receiving storing and disposal of police property/evidence inventory control recordkeeping and materials management as well as safety and security methods and practices involved in the handling and storage of firearms weapons narcotics drugs money vehicles and dangerous devices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal state and local criminal and civil laws codes and regulations for Records and Evidence.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office 365 tools Word PowerPoint Excel Outlook etc).
  • Skilled in oral and written communications.
  • Skilled in supervision and leadership.
  • Ability to access computer applications to identify case reports; confirm case numbers; and identify individuals criminal histories and warrants information evidence inventory information such as item location and release status and Court information such as case disposition status.
  • Ability to Communicate ideas and proposals verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to Establish and implement effective administrative programs and procedures.
  • Ability to Establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time management methodology.
  • Ability to Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to Lead and manage teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management subordinates other City employees vendors contractors and the public.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only) and a thorough background check conducted by the MTPD which verifies education employment and criminal history. All applicants background checks and fingerprints must be cleared by the Criminal Bureau of Apprehension in order to be a user of their CJIS system. Failure to be cleared by BCA will automatically nullify any job offer extended. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a casebycase basis based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Councilyou must pass a drug test (if moving from a nonsafety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal back ground check if the job youre applying for is safety sensitive is a supervisory or management job is in the Finance Information Services Audit or Human Resources departments or has access to financial records files/databases cash vouchers or transit fare cards.
