Position: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

General Definition of Work
Facilitate communication and access for students identified under the categorical area of Deaf/Hard of Hearing or 504 requiringinterpretation in the educational environment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Student Support Services.
Essential Functions
The ability to interpret/transliterate at a normal conversational rate in situations where students with hearing differences or parents are present utilizing American Sign Language(ASL).
Fluently and simultaneously interpret using ASL and facilitate translation of communication for the student(s) in all facets of daily classroom activities as per the Individual Education Plan or 504 plan.
Ability to use total communication with each child as it is required.
Work collaboratively with the other members of the student(s) education team to ensure full access for the student(s)
Provide instructional support by obtaining and reviewing all textbooks and supplemental materials required for classwork developing and reviewing vocabulary lists and providing reviews of lessons.
Provide information to the classroom teacher as to the role of the interpreter in the classroom.
Assist and monitor technology associated with student needs in the classroom.
Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities parent meetings and other needs as necessary for the student and support.
Restate and rephrase material presented in the classroom and in texts using the language level of the student.
Assist the teacher(s) by working on an individual or group basis with students as needed.
Develop rapport with the student without infringing on the students rights
Develop rapport with classroom teacher and other staff members
Education and Other Requirements
A BA degree from an Interpreter Training Program affiliated with an accredited educational institution or equivalent.
Current NIC Certification or minimum EIPA rating of 4.0 plus a passing grade on the EIPA written. If not yet certified participate in the twoyear provisional program with certification attained before expiration.
If certified you should maintain your licensing following RID CEU requirements.
