Summary of Position
The Associate Chaplain is a per diem position responsible for assisting with faith issues in the healing process. Provides crisis intervention; routine visits with patients families and staff; assists with spiritual assessments and works with community clergy. Associate Chaplains have oncall responsibilities on both weeknights and weekends.
Responsibilities and Standards
- Assess patient and family spiritual needs and assist families in using their faith in dealing with illness trauma and stress
- Actively participates in the delivery of interfaith pastoral care
- Ensures requests for spiritual care are responded to in a timely manner
- Provides crisis intervention as necessary
- Response within 45 minutes to all emergency calls when oncall
- Documents patient and family service provided in the patients medical record
- Provides appropriate referrals to community clergy when requested
- Supports an interdisciplinary approach to patient care through teamwork with other disciplines
- Attends monthly staff meetings and other meetings/training as needed
- Adheres to all Hospital standards policies and procedures
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Interpersonal skills to work with distressed and anxious patients families and employees
- Analytical ability to assess patients spiritual needs and sense of wellbeing and find appropriate solutions to patient concerns
- Empathy for the problems experienced by patients and families; commitment to help the distressed
- Communication skills are necessary to counsel patients families and employees
- Computer and writing skills.
KNOWLEDGE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
- Bachelors degree
- Ordained commissioned or recognized lay leader of denomination or local faith community
- In good standing with letter of recommendation by local leadership e.g. bishop synod classes etc.
- At least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education accredited through ACPE or 1 unit and a minimum of a years experience in a clinical setting
- 23 years of experience in religious leadership pastoral care or related clinical profession
- Ability to serve in an interfaith capacity without judgment or proselytizing
DESIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB.
- The level of knowledge acquired through the completion of a Master of Divinity degree Master of Arts in Religion or Master of Pastoral Counseling from an accredited school of theology.
- Two to four units of Clinical Pastoral Education.
- Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains National Associations of Jewish Chaplains National
- Association of Catholic Chaplains or other nationally recognized cognate groups and/or certification eligibility with further credentialing.
