Job Description

Job Summary:

The purpose of this job is to provide leadership in the establishment/maintenance of a safe and efficient transportation system for Bedford County Schools and to provide staff development opportunities for drivers and other transportation employees.

Essential Duties

  1. Supervises directs trains and evaluates assigned transportation staff (bus drivers car drivers bus aides and office staff) processing employee concerns and problems directing work counseling disciplining and completing employee performance appraisals.
  2. Coordinates assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  3. Ensures drivers and mechanics are trained and monitored according to state and federal regulations and procedures governing bus transportation.
  4. Assists with the development of instructional programs related to bus safety.
  5. Investigates complaints pertaining to the district transportation program.
  6. Investigates the circumstances regarding accidents involving district vehicles and documents information appropriately for insurance and other required purposes.
  7. Partner with Human Resources to drive the full lifecycle of transportation staff including recruitment hiring and continuous training initiatives.
  8. Develops student bus routes/schedules and maintains the transportation routing program.
  9. Assists with bus/school communication during peak hours.
  10. Monitors road conditions consulting with county and state agencies as needed.
  11. Ensures compliance with state and federal transportation requirements.
  12. Ensures regular and preventive maintenance of all districtowned vehicles and transportation equipment through supervision of the bus shop foreman.
  13. Acts as the designated liaison to school administration for all matters related to student conduct and disciplinary actions on school vehicles.
  14. In partnership with the Special Education Department ensure full compliance with federal mandates while prioritizing the unique needs of each student.
  15. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

A Virginia License in Administration and Supervision and experience in Administration and Supervision is preferred.

Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history. Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License with the proper endorsements to operate a school bus is perfered.

Physical Demands

Performs sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time: requires little or no dexterity.
