Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Art

POSITION TITLE: 202425 AY Lecturer Pool Art

POSITION DETAILS:

The Department of Art is housed in the College of Arts and Letters. At the undergraduate level it offers a BFA degree in Studio Art and BA degrees in Art Art History and Art Education (Single Subject PreCredential Preparation for grades K12). At the graduate level it offers an MFA degree in Studio Art. The Art Department is accredited by the National Association of Art and Design (NASAD).

Job duties for specific areas of I) Art Education; II) Art History; and III) Studio Art are as follows:

  1. Art Education: Teach undergraduate classes in Art Education for children and Secondary Art Education all with content conforming to national and California visual art standards
  2. Art History: Teach undergraduate classes in Western and nonWestern art art criticism and visual culture from prehistory to the present
  3. Studio Art: Teach undergraduate classes in art and visual culture ceramics drawing & painting new media art and animation printmaking and sculpture

The listing of courses provides course descriptions for the courses in the department. The semester schedule is available at duties of a parttime lecturer include instruction class preparation grading Canvas course management and office hours (per campus office hour policy). Other duties may be assigned based on departmental needs. Course assignments including dates time and modality are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

Parttime lecturers are instructional faculty with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Hires from the pool of applicants are made when there are instructional needs to fill coursework offered by an academic department based on changing enrollment patterns changes to tenuretrack faculty assignments and other factors that cannot be addressed with our existing faculty. Initial appointments are typically for one semester but occasionally academicyear initial appointments are made. Appointments may be renewed based on department needs funding and performance. Often appointments are made just prior to the start of the semester.

Rank and Salary

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department.

Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024 the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

Lecturer A: $5507 $6677

Lecturer B: $6221 $13224

Lecturer C: $6825 $14523

Lecturer D: $8593 $15211

The salary ranges indicated are based on a fulltime rate (15 weighted teaching units WTUs). A semesters worth of compensation is made up of six (6) payments of the given amount. To calculate your salary for a semester the base rate would be prorated based on the units worked out of 15 WTUs. If you were a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum salary your pay would be structured as follows: $5507 x 3/15 (3 units out of a possible 15 units total) $1101.40 x 6 checks $6608.40 total for 3 units/semester.

QUALIFICATIONS:

In general it is required to have a terminal degree in the field for which you are applying to teach. See below for exceptions and/or additional qualifications for specific areas:

I. Art Education:

REQUIRED: M.A. degree in Art Education or M.F.A. degree in Studio Art and K12 teaching experience in district settings.

PREFERRED: Ph.D. in Art Education; public school teaching experience and/or college teaching experience in art education.

II. Art History:

REQUIRED: M.A. degree for lowerdivision courses; Ph.D. for upperdivision courses. College teaching experience in Art History.

PREFERRED: Ph.D. for lowerdivision courses.

III. Studio Art:

REQUIRED: M.F.A. in Studio Art.

PREFERRED: College teaching experience.

EXISTING LECTURER APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Existing lecturers with anacademic year or semester appointment should reapply each year.

Existing lecturers with a threeyear appointment should reapply in the third year of their appointment.

    Summaries of courses taught (provide a listing of comparable college classes taught that includes the number of courses and course sections)
  3. Unofficial transcripts indicating the degree and specialization relevant to the discipline area for which you are requesting to be considered
  4. References names & contact information for three references who can address your teaching experience
  5. Please review the course catalog ( a description of courses in the department and indicate what courses you believe you are qualified to teach in the text field.
  6. Sample syllabi (comparable college courses accepted)
  7. For courses with more than 50% online instruction provide evidence of completing a minimum 10hour online training course focusing on online teaching
