The Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn Virginia where scientists pursue fundamental questions in the life sciences. HHMI launched Janelia in 2006 establishing an intellectually enriching environment for scientists to do creative collaborative handson work. Summary:
The Employee Communications Manager will own the planning and content creation lifecycle for any major internal communications projects and support requests specific to the Janelia Research Campus population. In addition this role will serve as lead editor and project manager for HHMIs internal communications function.
The Employee Communications Manager will manage multiple deadlines and priorities in alignment with HHMIs communication and engagement objectives and the internal communications editorial calendar. This role will create edit and publish content across various internal channels.
The Employee Communications Manager works a threeday hybrid schedule at HHMIs Janelia Research Campus and reports to the Director Employee and Science Communications. This role may require periodic travel to HHMI headquarters in Chevy Chase MD.

What you will do:
Create and execute the internal communications strategy and editorial calendar with strategic guidance from the Director Employee and Science Communications.
Manage the content lifecycle: generate ideas draft and edit content manage freelancers and prepare work for publishing on various internal channels to create highquality communications that further departmental goals.
Respond to requests for Janeliaspecific content including newsletters signage and supporting materials for campus life events that are tailored to the unique needs of the campus population.
Work collaboratively and proactively with Janelia departments (Campus Life P&C Scientific Programs etc.) on all internal communications content.
Work with the Science Outreach Officer to assign work to the Communications Content Specialist.
Identify compelling employee stories for internal audiences and develop engaging content with a storytelling framework.
Create graphics and other visual media materials for internal communications. Provide graphic design support to other areas of communications.
Develop a deep understanding of the Janelia Research Campus community and consistently assess how to improve communications to employees families visiting scientists etc.
Lead efforts to align Janelias internal communications with HHMIs broader internal communications serving as an onsite partner expert and liaison.
What you bring:
Bachelors degree. A masters degree in Communications or a related field is a plus.
Eight to ten years of experience in internal or employee communications with demonstrated ability to translate organizational information into compelling content for a variety of audiences.
Experience in higher education or a research setting is a plus.
One to three years of practical experience in developing managing and executing communications strategy.
Excellent writing and editing skills that reflect an ability to clarify and simplify complicated issues and technical subject matter with audience needs in mind.
Expertise in storytelling approach; ability to identify compelling stories and create engaging content.
Expertise in copyediting.
Experience with graphic design.
Willingness to own content creation from idea generation to publication with a commitment to accurate highquality work across a broad range of projects.
Ability to work independently with minimal guidance while aligning to departmental goals standards and expectations.
Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment with a range of stakeholders. Ability to maintain composure and productivity in projects with multiple owners. Ability to collaborate toward common goals.
Ability to develop trust and credibility with a wide range of colleagues. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Multimedia experience is a plus.
Experience formatting publishing and evaluating email newsletters. Experience with Poppulo Mail Chimp or similar software tools preferred.
Strong content management HTML and SharePoint skills.
Physical Requirements:

$112248.00 (minimum) $140310.00 (midpoint) $182403.00 (maximum)Pay Type:
AnnualHHMIs salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidates education previous experiences knowledge skills and abilities as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
