Springfield Public Schools is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Educational Assistant Health Assistant at the Academy of Arts & Academics (A3) High School. This position provides assistance with daily attendance record keeping and support for students in the Health Room.
The Health Assistant provides a variety of services to support student health monitoring and health care; involves application of established policies procedures and instructions in relation to health care and health services information compilation storage and retrieval; compiles and maintains student health care records; assists nurses and other health care providers.
Positions may be assigned to provide health services to support a variety of schools or provide support in a school health clinic setting.
Essential Functions
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Establishes and updates files and records of student health information including data such as health cards illness allergy and immunization including the use of medical record systems; reviews health information provided by parents/guardians and enters data into systems; responsible for accuracy of student health information records and providing accurate student health information to nurses creates student health charts verifies that all students meet state standards by appointed deadline; maintains school clinic health log and records.
- Provides assistance and followup with staff referrals and student hygiene issues as needed.
- Assists in health screening programs such as dental vision blood pressure fluoride rinse height weight scoliosis head lice scabies impetigo; records results of health screenings; assists nurse with administering treatment and periodic retesting.
- Provides consultation to families on head lice issues.
- May assist with attendance attendance monitoring and attendance reporting.
- Provides basic emergency medical and first aid care when necessary; assists nurse with further care as needed; contacts parents of injured children; administers Epinephrine per protocol if trained; administers glucagon per protocol if trained; may administer medicine per protocol if trained at the school and on field trips.
- Maintains inventory of materials for the health service facility prepares organizes medical equipment such as bandages thermometers and ice packs; monitors and maintains appropriate storage temperatures.
- Maintains a record of staff trainings needed for taking students on off campus trips and assists staff in obtaining the needed training for staff responsible for taking students on off campus trips.
- Completes required District logs forms and paperwork as required.
- Provides direct assistance to students behavioral academic and or personal needs.
- Maintains student discipline in the absence of the teacher/bus/van driver.
- Assists students with behavior management including deescalation conflict resolution and adherence to school/bus/van behavioral expectations.
- Assists students with special needs and or adaptive equipment.
- May provides direct assistance to teacher/bus/van driver in relation to student management and school/bus/van safety.
- May under direct supervision of a licensed teacher provides supplemental practice for various learning experiences including drills and activities using effective strategies to reinforce and or modify skills.
- Assists students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- May assess and record student academic and behavior measures.
- Provides ongoing training and proactive assistance to students in relation to meeting academic and behavioral expectations.
- Provides proactive supervision of students in a variety of settings.
- Performs setting up and taking down of materials supplies and furniture to support the behavioral and academic success of students.
- Evaluates student injuries and performs first aid.
- May assist in planning and implementing learning experiences for students.
- May perform duties associated with general record keeping related to the accounting of funds received.
- Attends inservice trainings and staff meetings as directed.
- Conduct basic data entry assignments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Associates degree or higher (attach diploma); OR
- Completion of two years postsecondary study consisting of 72 credit hours 48 semester units (attach transcripts); OR
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment or paraprofessional certificate program knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing as appropriate reading/language arts writing and mathematics or reading readiness writing readiness and mathematics readiness.
Certificates Licenses Registration & Other Requirements
- Ability to obtain and hold a valid First Aid/CPR card and pass SafeSchools training modules as assigned such as medication administration training and certificate EPIPen training immunization alert (State of Oregon) glucagon training and blood borne pathogen certification.

Desired Qualifications
- Related experience in an educational setting.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities (May be acquired through education training and/or experience.)
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; modern office practices and procedures; letter writing correct language usage; receptionist telephone and record keeping/filing systems; computer hardware and software programs and their usage; modern office equipment; safety and first aid practices and procedures.
Ability to: understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; maintain appropriate appearance and attire; maintain attendance standards as outlined in OSEA bargaining agreement; greet stakeholders; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies procedures and other pertinent information; operate maintain and arrange for repair various office/school equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; maintain records; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Effort:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk stand sit use hands for fine manipulation handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds and occasionally maneuver up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
