Maintenance and Grounds Manager

Purpose Statement

The Maintenance and Grounds Manager is responsible for the daytoday oversight and management of the districts buildings grounds athletic facilities general maintenance mowing operations and vehicle fleet. This leadership role ensures all district facilities are safe functional and wellmaintained in order to support the learning environment for students and staff. The position coordinates and executes maintenance and grounds operations across all K12 school buildings and facilities within the district.

Salary Grade: Grade 14

FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: Operations / Facilities

Reports To:Director of Operations

Work Schedule: Fulltime 12month position

Working Conditions:

  • Onsite work required across multiple school locations.
  • May involve physical labor use of tools or equipment and exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Must be available for occasional evening/weekend hours and/or emergency callouts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Associates degree or completion of a certified trade school program required; Bachelors degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership experience including direct supervision of maintenance trades or custodial personnel.
  • Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication.
    Strong organizational skills with a proven track record of managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Positive work history that reflects professionalism dependability and a collaborative approach.
    Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff colleagues and external partners.
  • Excellent problemsolving skills and the ability to respond effectively to unexpected challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in facilities or operations management preferably in a school district or public sector environment.
  • Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC electrical plumbing) grounds maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints technical manuals and construction documents.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee and manage a team of 1015 maintenance and grounds staff including scheduling training performance evaluations and promoting a culture of accountability and excellence in service.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of all district buildings and infrastructure to ensure safety functionality and compliance with regulations.
  • Direct all groundskeeping operations including mowing landscaping irrigation snow removal and general outdoor facility upkeep.
  • Manage the readiness and upkeep of athletic facilities; coordinate with athletic staff to ensure field preparation equipment setup and safety for practices and events.
  • Develop implement and monitor preventative maintenance schedules for buildings equipment and grounds.
  • Coordinate work with external contractors vendors and service providers to ensure quality and timely completion of projects and services.
  • Monitor and manage the Maintenance and Grounds Department budget including forecasting purchasing and tracking expenditures.
  • Respond promptly to emergency facility issues and direct necessary actions to resolve problems safely and efficiently.

  • Participate in staff development training faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

  • Collaborate effectively with others maintaining positive and productive communication with all school personnel.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by the Ankeny Community School District to ensure the safety of oneself and others.
  • Support the goals and objectives of the school district while following all district policies.
  • Demonstrate regular and dependable attendance to ensure smooth district operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.

Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases and chemicals. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
