Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Thrift Store Supervisor ensures that the Cornwall Thrift Store is organized neat and provides service to customers. In addition they contribute to the stores success by assisting the Thrift Store Manager in executing store operations.

Accountabilities:

Operations

  • Assist the Thrift Store Manager in executing store operations.
  • Determine and maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Supervise and participate in sorting and tagging merchandise unloading donations stocking shelves and performing cash transactions.
  • Responsible for assisting and supervising a team of employees and volunteers to ensure standards in sales meeting sales target customer service merchandising marketing and public relations are achieved.
  • In consultation with the Thrift Store Manager develop/plan the store layout to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays decides on instore promotions and auction and advising of any recommendations for new racks shelving and signage.
  • Serve the customers in a courteous and efficient manner by listening to and addressing customer concerns suggestions and complaints and discussing with the Thrift Store Manager as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy in the completion of all customer transactions.
  • Prepare sales summaries when required; contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Inventory control: retrieve sort price and discard or recycle any stale or unsaleable items on an ongoing basis; seek to protect the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
  • Participate in ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the store is up to standard policy including practicing Tidy Maintenance.
Supervision
  • Assist in the recruitment process for staff and volunteers; participate in the regular supervision of staff and volunteers; assist in the completion of regular performance evaluations and appraisals with the Thrift Store Manager.

  • Assist with staff and volunteer orientation and training for all aspects of merchandise handling including receiving sorting stocking and check out as well as all aspects of customer service.

  • Monitor employee volunteers performance and report any concerns/questions to the Thrift Store Manager.

  • In consultation with the Thrift Store Manager prepare employee/volunteer work schedules; plan coverage for vacation/sick days.

  • Provide corrective feedback to improve employee and volunteer performance; positive feedback (reinforcement) to recognize good performance.

  • Assist in ensuring that all ongoing mandatory employment requirements are met and maintained i.e. elearning Health and Safety training Armatus Abuse Prevention training background checks etc.

Communication

  • Communicate any maintenance issues in a timely manner to supervisor.

  • Communicate regularly with the Thrift Store Manager to ensure consistent adherence to Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions and for support as needed.

  • Determine and submit requests regarding instore operational needs and supplies as necessary.

Health and Safety

  • Assist with monitoring staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards policies and procedures and prepare submit and act on incident reports; provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.

  • Asist with ensuring instore safety for staff volunteers and customers i.e. snow removal clear fire exits no obstacles inside/outside store spillage and store cleanliness; ensure property (store) is secure at all times.

  • Assist in the orientation of new employees and volunteers regarding health and safety procedures Ministry Unit Store Policies/Promotions etc.

  • Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the Thrift Store Manager.

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position reports directly to Thrift Store Manager or designate.

  • Responsible for providing direction and checking results for TS employees and volunteers but generally works alongside those supervised. The number of volunteers may fluctuate from day to day and week to week within established guidelines.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store.

  • Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to regarding cash handling etc.

  • Assist with providing oversight to the cash and debit sales ensuring that bank deposits balance and are deposited daily as per store and TSA policy; the float is secured for the next day.

  • Assist the Thrift Store Manager in strategizing appropriate actions to attain financial goals monitoring the cost of goods (i.e. buying products from the warehouse tracking costs associated with products etc.)

  • Prepare financial and other requested reports for submission to the Thrift Store Manager Corps Officer Divisional/Territorial Headquarters i.e. sales reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent fulltime position based on 37.5 hours per week.

  • This job requires the ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting bending crouching and reaching is ; the ability to lift/move 40 pounds.

  • The incumbent may be exposed to moving objects and angry people.

  • The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures in addition to health and safety rules and regulations such as universal precautions i.e. wearing gloves when working with unknown contents.

  • Work schedule may vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays.

  • Your supervisor sets the hours of work and work schedule and flexibility in scheduling is .

Normal hours of work: the Thrift Store hours of operation are Monday to Saturday 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Work shifts are typically scheduled between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday to Saturday and include a hour unpaid meal break where applicable. The hours of work and hours of operation are subject to review as .

Education Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a postsecondary College Certificate Program in Business/Retail Management or equivalent.

  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Have a minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience including retail marketing and supervisory experience.

  • Cash handling experience is .

  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e. bank deposits summary reports etc.

  • Basic math skills are to calculate discounts and percentages.

  • Product brand awareness would be an asset.

  • Experience working in a computerized environment.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.99 to $23.73 with a maximum of $28.48.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
