AES seeks an attorney with significant environmental and real estate experience for its U.S. Utilities Businesses located in Indiana and Ohio and to support its other Generation businesses. These businesses are an important part of AES mission of accelerating the future of energy together by improving lives and delivering exceptional service and value to customers and our shareholders and communities. The position reports to the U.S. Utilities General Counsel and provides counseling to the business on environmental compliance real estate transactions and related matters and manages environmental litigation and administrative proceedings. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the internal legal efforts including managing outside counsel and directly advising business units on these matters. Industry experience is preferred. Office location is in Indianapolis IN or Dayton OH.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advise the businesses on relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  • Represent the businesses in meetings with regulatory agencies including IDEM US & Ohio EPA.
  • Support development of strategies to defend and resolve environmental proceedings.
  • Manage environmental litigation including state permitting appeals.
  • Interact with environmental agencies on permitting enforcement matters and appeals.
  • Negotiate and review legal documents related to real estate ownership and transactions.
  • Support environmental and real estate due diligence in M&A and other transactions.
  • Draft environmental disclosures in connection with company SEC reporting.
  • Assist in other matters where needed.

Desired Experience and Attributes

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one state.
  • 6 years of relevant experience at a large law firm or comparable inhouse corporate or governmental environment with a sophisticated environmental practice.
  • Energy sector experience preferred.
  • Experience with interpretation and implementation of environmental regulations associated with the CAA CWA CERCLA & RCRA.
  • Decisive organized methodical biased toward action and a commercially focused mindset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple internal group members in different functions and businesses.
  • Independent selfdriven personality capable of carrying out broad legal assignments with minimal supervision and of communicating well with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Detail oriented with exceptional regulatory compliance and drafting and negotiating skills.
  • Requires the ability to manage time well and to quickly adapt to changing schedules and work assignments. Very limited travel may be required.
  • Strong analytical problemsolving and consulting abilities with superior judgment and discretion.
  • Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
