Job Summary
Performs technical building inspections (commercial and residential) and plans examining work to enforce compliance with building codes regulations and ordinances; conduct research on new construction materials and methods; reviews plans for compliance with city state and federal rules and regulations; and provides information to and works with the public to resolve problems.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
- Performs after hours work as required (nights and weekends)
- Assist with emergency response as needed by city hall and local EOC.
- Inspect commercial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes ordinances and regulations.
- Examine plans and specifications of new construction additions and alterations to determine compliance with city state and federal codes ordinances rules and regulations.
- Inspect existing buildings and premises for change of use occupancy or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Inspect buildings heating and ventilating systems retaining walls and other structures in the process of construction remodeling or repair to ensure they meet approved permit plans and specifications.
- Respond to citizen complaints and concerns; issues notice to comply on violations.
- Confer with architects contractors builders and the general public in the field and office to explain and interpret building requirements and restrictions.
- Records and maintains files and reports regarding inspections.
- Respond to natural disaster emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Must have High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Three (3) to five (5) years of related work experience to perform such job.
- Applicant must pass preemployment criminal background check and drug screen at Citys expense.
- Applicant must have current valid Class C Drivers License and be insurable.
- Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within first three months of hire date.
- Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.
- Must be able to obtain an ICC Inspector (Plumbing Mechanical or Electrical) or Plans Examiner Certification within 6 months of employment and/or Commercial or Residential Building Inspector within 12 months).
Knowledge Abilities and Skill
- Knowledge of ICC Building Codes state statues and local ordinances zoning and land use laws.
- Knowledge of local state and federal laws codes and regulations.
- Possess or acquire an understanding of inspections procedures and requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to read and interpret plans drawings and engineering specifications.
- Ability to enforce necessary regulations with firmness and tact.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff City officials and the general public.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Works both Indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Requires agility and strength.
- Moving in about construction sites or over rough terrain or must be able to remain stationary.
- Occasional lifting moving or positioning objects up to 60lbs.
