About the role:
The Teacher Advisory Board (TAB) advises and supports NelsonAtkins School Programs & Partnerships (SPP) staff to ensure K12 educators and students are wellserved by the departments offerings.
TAB members provide feedback and collaborate with museum staff to develop programs and resources for school groups and teachers that meet educator needs and reflect the departments values of collaboration creativity equity inclusion & accessibility and empathy.
TAB members also promote NelsonAtkins offerings within their school communities and keep SPP staff members uptodate on priorities within their schools and districts.
This may include:
Providing feedback on tours workshops other school programs teacher professional development etc. especially as pertains to curricular relevance.
Providing suggestions and feedback on resources for teachers and students in development.
Contributing to the creation of teacher resources and events related to the museums collection and special exhibitions.
Connecting SPP staff with area schools and informing staff of developments in K12 educational spaces including:
o Pedagogical trends such as arts integration virtual learning tools socialemotional learning culturally responsive teaching etc.
o Learning standards and curriculum frameworks
o School and districtwide initiatives
o Statewide education policies and their effects
Identifying areas of interest to K12 teachers and their students; brainstorming ways for the museum to address those needs through programming.
Promoting information about NelsonAtkins programs and sharing the museums resources with others in your immediate school and district and through professional networks.
Representing the Teacher Advisory Board and sharing firsthand classroom experience with other constituents in the museum such as docents the Trustees Education Committee etc.
TAB Member Responsibilities:
Serve a oneyear term for theschool year and attend five meetings typically held onsite at the museum. Dinner will be provided at each inperson meeting. Some meetings may be held virtually. Meeting dates are:
o Wednesday October 22 4:30 6:30 pm
o Wednesday November 19 4:30 6:30 pm
o Wednesday January 21 4:30 6:30 pm
o Wednesday February 18 4:30 6:30 pm
o Wednesday April 15 4:30 6:30 pm
Contribute an additional estimated 1 hour of feedback each month in the form of email communication responses to surveys and/or optional smallgroup meetings.
Regularly participate in the museums programming. Each TAB member is encouraged to bring a school group to the museum for a school tour or workshop during theschool year. Financial assistance is available to help offset field trip expenses.
TAB Member Benefits:
$300 stipend disbursed in May 2026 upon completion of the responsibilities outlined above.
Participation in a learning community of peer educators who are committed to engagement with the arts.
Behindthescenes access to museum exhibitions museum staff and opportunities to learn more about the NelsonAtkins collection.
Knowledge of museum programming and the ability to influence future programming and create resources for the education community.
How to Apply:
Current K12 educators (of any subject area) who wish to join the board are asked to submit an online application by EOD Sunday August 24 2025. Selected applicants will be contacted in September and invited to a group interview with other prospective TAB members and SPP staff.
Ensuring a representative board that reflects the diversity of schools districts subject areas stages of teaching career grade levels and classroom roles is the primary factor in selecting board members. In addition the following criteria are considered:
Ability to work collaboratively
Creativity and flexible thinking
Familiarity with larger trends in education including teaching with technology
Interest in teaching with art from the NelsonAtkins
Ability to advocate for the NelsonAtkins among colleagues
Past participation in museum programs
