Security Captain
General Summary:TheSecurity Captain will oversee thedaytoday security operations at the zoo and supervise the activities of allsecurity personnelusing allocated financial and facilityZoo resources. This position supports the Zoo to achieve its animal careconservation sustainability education and DEAI goals.
EssentialFunctions:
PrimaryFunctions:
- Responsiblefor overseeing the day to day operations of all shifts;
- Responsible for monitoringand rotating throughout all buildings grounds and animal related areasinvestigating suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences;
- Provide and manage securityfor all Zoo events;
- Interact in a consistentlypleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees guests vendors and othervisitors of the Zoo and demonstrate the highest standards of internal andexternal customer service;
- Responsible for leadingsecurity investigations;
- Respond to all requests for first aid and/or CPRfrom guests or employees and attend to the needs of the individual requestingassistance;
- Responsiblefor handling alarm procedures and emergency situations;
- Provideguest control including challenging situations;
- Assist with locating lost children;
- Set up perimeter parkingcontrols during Zoo events and Parks and Recreations functions;
- Review records of employeerelated calls or afterhoursvisits;
- Remain on call 24 hours/dayto handle alarms and emergency situations;
- Mustensure that all established standards of professionalism and protocol are beingpracticed by all staff;
- Responsible for ensuring guest safety at all times;
- Perform other duties asassigned; and
- Adhere to all policies andprocedures of the Zoo.
Communication(Internal and External):
- Responsible for communicatingeffectively with staff and the public regarding standard operating procedures;
- Responsible for coordinating with other departmentsas necessary to fulfill any needs relatedto special event requests and departmental training;
- Review and investigate when necessary dailyreports on employees guests and shift activities;
- Monitorradios to ensure effective communication;
- Monitor equipment for repairs and replacement ifnecessary; and
- Attend meetings and representthe Zoo on various committees.
Managementof Resources (Financial Human Resources Facilities):
- Responsible for establishing department budget andgoals;
- Manage department budget;
- Responsible for achieving established departmentalgoals;
- Cultivateevaluate and train Security staff rendering discipline when necessary;
- Assist in all human resources functions for securitystaff including interviewing hiring performance appraisals disciplinaryactions and terminations;
- Coordinate and/or facilitate training for securitystaff including but not limited to FirstAid CPR report writing lostchildren protocol and stress code response;
- Create work schedules for the Security department toensure appropriate coverage including after hours events;
- Process and approve timesheets for security staff;and
- Responsiblefor perimeter fence keys (manual and electronic) and records.
MinimumQualifications:
- Hospitality:
- Friendly and outgoing;
- Possess a positive andpatient attitude;
- Must be effective in handlingproblems (including anticipating preventing identifying and solving problemsas needed); and
- Possess excellent verbalcommunication skills.
Education:
- Highschool diploma or equivalent; and
- Associatesdegree in Law Enforcement or Security related field preferred.
Experience/Training:
- Minimumof five years relevant experience;
- Minimumof three years supervisory experience;
- Possess tactical training;
- Good working knowledge ofsecurity operations in a business environment;
- FirstAid and CPR certifications preferred;
- Proficiencywith Microsoft Office software including Microsoft Outlook Excel and Word; and
- Validdrivers license.
WorkingConditions:
- Must be able to stand andremain active for an eighthour shift;
- Mustbe able to travel or walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
- Must be able to work in anoutdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather includingheat/humidity cold temperatures and/or wet conditions;
- Ability to work a flexibleschedule to include weekends holidays and special events;
- Must be able to exert up to50 pounds of force to lift push pull carry or otherwise move objects; and
- Exposureto Zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack.
Equipment:
- Mustbe able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computercopier fax scanner telephone twoway radio golf carts and vehicles.
